Carrere, 1984: Italian Italo disco that hit number one at home
In February 1984, Raffaele Riefoli (Raf) released Self Control on Carrere as the lead single from his album Raf. He co-wrote it with Giancarlo Bigazzi and Steve Piccolo; Bigazzi produced, and Celso Valli arranged. The 7″ runs about 4:21; the 12″ stretches further with a dance mix. The song is Italian Italo disco built for European radio and clubs: a steady dance pulse, synth lines, and a clear English vocal hook about losing control at night.
Raf’s version topped the Italian charts for seven non-consecutive weeks and reached number one in Switzerland. It peaked at number two in West Germany, number seven in Austria, and number six in Spain. The same year, American singer Laura Branigan cut a cover that dominated many other markets. In Switzerland the two versions traded the top spot through the summer. In Italy, the original stayed the reference; abroad, many listeners met the song first through Branigan.
The video and TV appearances push the neon, night-city image that stuck to mid-1980s Eurodisco. The extended mix adds a rap section rare for a white Italian pop single at the time. Bigazzi and Valli keep the arrangement tight: bass and drums hold a simple dance pattern, keyboards carry the main figure, and Raf’s vocal sits dry enough to stay intelligible on AM radio.
Riefoli was still early in his Italian pop career when Bigazzi brought the song into the studio. The English lyric and the dance arrangement were aimed at export as much as at domestic radio. Carrere’s European network mattered: the same master could chart in Milan, Zurich, and Munich without a separate English-market rewrite. That is why the Branigan cover felt like a parallel release rather than a distant remake.
Listen for the way the bass and kick stay simple while the synth figure repeats: the hook is the night-drive pattern, not a dense studio pile-up. On Italian TV Raf sold the song with the same serious face as the single sleeve. For a first major hit, the record is unusually clear about its lane: club pulse, radio chorus, no guitar heroics.
Oh, the night is my world.
(Raf, lyric from Self Control, 1984)

Carrere issued the single across much of continental Europe. Combined with Branigan’s cover, the song became one of the decade’s most covered Italo disco exports, but the writing credit stays with Bigazzi, Piccolo, and Raf. Later Italian pop careers often nod to this breakthrough as the moment Riefoli became a chart name beyond Italy.
Hear Raf’s original before the cover story: the Carrere single, the Italian number one run, and the night-drive synth figure that Europe learned by heart in 1984.

Anyone else think the live versions of Self Control are better? Studio still wins for me though. Might be recency bias but I do not care today.

I never knew that detail about the session. Changes how I hear the intro. Sharing this in the group chat. Expect chaos.

Still puts Self Control on whenever I need a reset. Never gets old. Also the comments section on old forums was wild about this.

The production notes here made me replay Self Control twice. Nice catch. Coffee got cold while I finished the article. Acceptable. I am biased and fine with it.
