Sessions with Eddie Kramer in Miami collapsed after clashes with Malcolm Young. Manager Michael Browning pushed for Robert John \u00abMutt\u00bb Lange, then known for tightening rock and pop sides rather than for Australian pub volume. In March the band moved to London, rehearsed in a cold room with a dirt floor, then tracked at Roundhouse Studios in Chalk Farm from 24 March to 14 April. Mixing moved to Basing Street. The result, released 27 July 1979, was <em>Highway to Hell<\/em>, the last studio album with Bon Scott.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lange drilled tuning, groove, and backing vocals. Engineer Tony Platt later said Mutt taught the band how to work a pocket instead of only charging forward. Bon pushed back when told to manage his breathing on <em>If You Want Blood (You&#8217;ve Got It)<\/em>; Lange sang the line himself to prove the point, and the room listened. Choruses got stacked harmony that still sounded like AC\/DC, not soft rock. The title track opens on a guitar-and-drums figure Angus and Malcolm had demoed so roughly that an engineer nearly lost the only cassette when a child unraveled the tape; Bon spliced it back together before the song that would define the campaign disappeared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Across ten tracks the writing stays blunt: tour fatigue, lust, swagger. <em>Girls Got Rhythm<\/em> and <em>Walk All Over You<\/em> keep the mid-tempo punch; <em>Shot Down in Flames<\/em> and <em>Get It Hot<\/em> stay lean. Cliff Williams&#8217; bass and Phil Rudd&#8217;s drums sit dry and loud. Compared with the Vanda &amp; Young Sydney records, the guitars are cleaner in the stereo field, but the riffs are the same Young-family grammar. The title single climbed the Hot 100 and became a permanent sports-arena cue. For the band it proved they could leave Albert Studios, work with an outside producer, and still sound like themselves. For Bon Scott it was the peak before his death in February 1980, months before <em>Back in Black<\/em> rewrote the catalog with Brian Johnson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Highway to Hell<\/em> remains the cleanest argument for the Bon-era band at full commercial power: three-week tracking discipline, choruses built for fists, and a cover image that sold devil horns without apology. Later hard-rock breakthroughs still borrow its template: hire a detail obsessive, keep the riffs stupid-strong, and let the singer stay dangerous.
