Tony Visconti produced again at the Magic Shop and Human Worldwide in Manhattan. Two days later Bowie died of liver cancer. The record stopped being a late-career surprise and became a public farewell, but the sessions had already locked the music before that fact landed on the news cycle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The title piece runs near ten minutes. Johan Renck&#8217;s video stages ritual images and a button-eyed scarecrow while the band moves from free-leaning passages into a tight groove. \u00ab&#8216;Tis a Pity She Was a Whore\u00bb and \u00abSue (Or in a Season of Crime)\u00bb keep the horns and drums upfront; the writing borrows jazz phrasing without turning the album into a standards set. \u00abLazarus,\u00bb tied to the Off-Broadway musical Bowie co-wrote with Enda Walsh, opens with the line about being in heaven and a video of Bowie in a hospital bed that suddenly read as documentary once the obituaries ran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00abGirl Loves Me\u00bb stacks Nadsat and Polari slang over a clipped beat. \u00abDollar Days\u00bb and \u00abI Can&#8217;t Give Everything Away\u00bb close the sequence with clearer song shapes and a guitar tone that nods at earlier Bowie eras without copying them. Across the album, McCaslin, Jason Lindner, Tim Lefebvre, and Mark Guiliana play as a working band, not as guest colour. Bowie kept the illness private from the public, booked a band that could improvise inside structures, and left a finished album timed to his birthday.
