At Trident Studios in London in 1971, David Bowie sits with a song that began as a private joke about My Way<\/em>. He had once written English lyrics to Claude Fran\u00e7ois’s French tune Comme d’habitude<\/em>, only to watch Paul Anka and Frank Sinatra take the global hit. Life on Mars?<\/em> answers that slight with a wider canvas: a girl with mousy hair in a cinema, a newsreel that fails her, and a chorus that asks the title question without expecting a tidy reply. The melody still wears a distant cousin of that chord walk, but the pictures and the piano make it something else entirely.<\/p>\n

The track lands on Hunky Dory<\/em>, released in December 1971 on RCA, produced by Ken Scott with Bowie. Rick Wakeman, then between Yes sessions, plays the grand piano that carries the verse and the lift into the chorus. Mick Ronson arranges strings that swell without smothering the vocal. The Spiders keep a dry studio floor under the drama so the piano and voice stay readable. You hear the room before you hear the myth, which is why the drama still feels earned rather than theatrical for its own sake.<\/p>\n
