Before the glam costumes fill the frame, Bowie stages a market-square panic: a news guy weeps, mothers sigh, and the clock is set at five years until the end. Woody Woodmansey&#8217;s tom pattern marks the count. Mick Ronson&#8217;s guitar and piano colour the verses. Trevor Bolder holds the low end. Ken Scott and Bowie keep the mix open enough for the lyric list to land like a camera moving through a crowd.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The writing works as reportage more than prophecy lecture. Fat-skinny people, tall-short people, a soldier, a cop, an ice-cream parlour glimpse. Bowie packs the warehouse of a brain that has no spare room. The chorus does not offer comfort. It repeats the deadline until the band swells and the vocal cracks into the high, strained finish that ends side one&#8217;s first statement. You feel the room fill before any spaceship arrives, which is why the opener still works when played alone, stripped of later Ziggy lore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On stage with the Spiders, the track often set the temperature for the whole show: slow-build dread before the set turns to faster glam rockers. Later live films keep that shape. There is no hit-single packaging here in the same way as <em>Starman<\/em>; the job is to start the narrative and make the clock audible. RCA put the album out as a complete story, and this cut is the title card. Skip it and the rest of the record feels like you walked into a film after the newsflash.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What keeps the listen sharp is the drum figure and the spoken-sung verses. Woodmansey never rushes the count. Ronson colours without stealing the frame. Bowie&#8217;s voice moves from report to near-break without tipping into melodrama.
