Steve Jolley, Tony Swain, Ashley Ingram, and frontman Leee John share the writing credit. Jolley &#038; Swain also produce. The 7-inch clocks about 3:55; the 12-inch version runs past eight minutes for the dancefloor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Imagination are Leee John (vocals, keyboards), Ashley Ingram (bass, vocals), and Errol Kennedy (drums). After <em>Body Talk<\/em> and the 1981 hit of the same name, the trio keep the Roman-costume TV look and that rubbery post-disco bass. On <em>Just an Illusion<\/em>, John\u2019s falsetto sits over a dry snare, clipped rhythm guitar, and a bassline that walks more than it slaps. The lyric is blunt: desire that may not be real, sung as if the club will settle the argument.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The single enters the UK chart in early March 1982 and peaks at number 2, with eleven weeks inside the Top 100 and five weeks in the Top 10. It reaches number 1 in Spain, number 2 in Italy and Switzerland, and Top 10 across France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia. In the United States it hits number 27 on Billboard\u2019s Black Singles chart and number 15 on Dance Club Play. BBC\u2019s <em>Top of the Pops<\/em> puts the togas in living rooms for weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The arrangement is pure Jolley &#038; Swain craft: synth pads under the vocal, a bass that refuses to hurry, and a chorus built for both radio and 12-inch edits. Imagination follow the same year with <em>Music and Lights<\/em> (UK No. 5) and sell out European dates on the strength of that 1981\u201382 streak.
