En febrero de 1988 Kitchenware public\u00f3 Cars and Girls<\/em>, el primer single de Prefab Sprout en dos a\u00f1os. Paddy McAloon lo hab\u00eda escrito en 1985, y el grupo ya lo hab\u00eda tocado en directo ese a\u00f1o. La portada mostraba una figura de Bruce Springsteen hecha de cerillas, con la cabeza en llamas. La cara B era Vendetta<\/em>. El 12 pulgadas a\u00f1ad\u00eda Nero the Zero<\/em>. El single pas\u00f3 cinco semanas en la lista brit\u00e1nica y lleg\u00f3 al puesto 44. No entr\u00f3 en el top 40.<\/p>\n

Thomas Dolby hab\u00eda producido Steve McQueen<\/em> y varias canciones del \u00e1lbum siguiente, pero esta la dej\u00f3 pasar. Cre\u00eda que otro productor pod\u00eda hacer el trabajo igual de bien que \u00e9l, o mejor. La produjo Jon Kelly, con McAloon tambi\u00e9n acreditado. Richard Moakes mezcl\u00f3. Lu\u00eds Jardim toc\u00f3 la percusi\u00f3n. Los teclados incluyeron a Gary Moberley y Paul Wickens. Wendy Smith cant\u00f3 con McAloon, Martin McAloon el bajo, Neil Conti la bater\u00eda. El \u00e1lbum From Langley Park to Memphis<\/em> lleg\u00f3 en marzo de 1988, Kitchenware a trav\u00e9s de CBS. La letra no es la nota de alguien que odia a Springsteen. El fallo escoci\u00f3 porque Steve McQueen<\/em> le hab\u00eda ense\u00f1ado a esperar un regreso. Dijo que el fracaso lo despert\u00f3, y que ya no volvi\u00f3 a apuntar tan alto. El single siguiente del mismo \u00e1lbum, The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll<\/em>, lleg\u00f3 al n\u00famero 7 en el Reino Unido, su \u00fanico top 10, con apariciones en Top of the Pops y en Wogan. En agosto de 1988 se cont\u00f3 que el grupo hab\u00eda convencido a CBS de reeditar Cars and Girls<\/em>. La reedici\u00f3n no se hizo. La canci\u00f3n se qued\u00f3 como la que los fans conservaron, el single que fall\u00f3.<\/p>\n

La portada de cerillas era el argumento en una sola imagen: el imaginario de Springsteen, en llamas, en un 7 pulgadas de Kitchenware que la radio no meti\u00f3 en el top 40. McAloon guard\u00f3 la canci\u00f3n en el relato que hizo de sus propias expectativas. Las autopistas de la letra siguen sin pasar por Witton Gilbert. Una recopilaci\u00f3n posterior, A Life of Surprises<\/em>, volvi\u00f3 a poner el tema en circulaci\u00f3n. La grabaci\u00f3n que importa es el single de 1988, producido por Jon Kelly, no el remaster de la colecci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
