El 12 de julio de 1996 Jonathan Melvoin muri\u00f3 de una sobredosis de hero\u00edna en un hotel de Nueva York. Ten\u00eda 34 a\u00f1os. Hab\u00eda tocado los teclados en la formaci\u00f3n en vivo de The Family, y est\u00e1 en Around the World in a Day<\/em> y Parade<\/em>. Sus hermanas son Wendy y Susannah Melvoin. En las semanas siguientes Prince estaba en Paisley Park grabando The Love We Make<\/em>, un tema lento que nombra la aguja y la cuchara sin rodeos.<\/p>\n

Prince Vault cuenta que describi\u00f3 la canci\u00f3n como una forma de hablar al esp\u00edritu de un amigo perdido por las drogas. La letra no imprime el nombre de Melvoin. El concierto de salida en Paisley Park, el 12 de noviembre de 1996, sali\u00f3 en directo a la vez por MTV, VH1 y BET. La media hora se apoy\u00f3 en Jam of the Year<\/em>, Get Yo Groove On<\/em> y One of Us<\/em>, con una New Power Generation de cuatro: Kirk Johnson, Rhonda Smith, Morris Hayes y Kat Dyson. En el escenario apareci\u00f3 m\u00e1s tarde y solo de vez en cuando, desde un House of Blues en Las Vegas el 31 de enero de 2004 hasta un segundo show en Oakland el 28 de febrero de 2016.<\/p>\n

Lo que se oye es una balada a medio tiempo: una bater\u00eda simple, la guitarra de Dyson en los huecos, y un estribillo que repite una orden. Dyson acababa de entrar en la NPG como guitarrista. Su parte aqu\u00ed es apoyo, no un solo. Sin puesto en listas, sin v\u00eddeo. El resto de Emancipation<\/em> habla mucho de Mayte Garcia, casada ese febrero, y del fin del contrato con Warner. Este tema es el otro hecho de 1996. La misma grabaci\u00f3n acab\u00f3 despu\u00e9s en Anthology: 1995-2010<\/em>. La canci\u00f3n en s\u00ed es la toma de noviembre de 1996: un amigo nombrado en la sala, no en la etiqueta.<\/p>\n
