Los Red Hot Chili Peppers tocan Universally Speaking<\/em> en p\u00fablico antes de que el disco exista como producto. El archivo de directos fecha la primera vez el 18 de agosto de 2001, en el V Festival de Stafford. By the Way<\/em> no llega a las tiendas hasta el 9 de julio de 2002. Para entonces el tema ha pasado por Cello Studios, en Los \u00c1ngeles, donde Rick Rubin graba el \u00e1lbum entre octubre de 2001 y mayo de 2002. Los cuatro autores son los de siempre en este disco: Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante, Chad Smith. Dura 4:19. La guitarra de Frusciante es mel\u00f3dica y limpia, m\u00e1s cerca de los estribillos de este \u00e1lbum que del funk de slap de 1991, y su voz de armon\u00eda se sienta al lado de Kiedis, no detr\u00e1s.<\/p>\n

Warner Bros. no lo trata como sencillo americano. By the Way<\/em>, The Zephyr Song<\/em>, Can’t Stop<\/em> y Dosed<\/em> ya hab\u00edan llevado el disco en la radio de Estados Unidos. Universally Speaking<\/em> sale como cuarto y \u00faltimo sencillo, y solo en Europa y Australia, el 16 de junio de 2003. La lista brit\u00e1nica lo hace entrar el 28 de junio en el n\u00famero 27, su pico, y luego baja. Tambi\u00e9n llega al n\u00famero 5 de la lista rock del Reino Unido, al 42 en Irlanda, al 43 en Italia y al 80 en Australia. XFM lo llama una oda rock bastante alegre. El CD lleva una mezcla de John Frusciante, un By the Way<\/em> ac\u00fastico en directo y, en otra edici\u00f3n, Slowly Deeply<\/em>, un descarte viejo que andaba suelto desde la era de Californication<\/em>.<\/p>\n

El v\u00eddeo, dirigido por Dick Rude, es una secuela, no un clip de actuaci\u00f3n. En el v\u00eddeo de By the Way<\/em>, Kiedis deja un libro en un taxi. Dave Sheridan, el mismo pasajero desquiciado, se pasa Universally Speaking<\/em> intentando devolverlo. El libro es Lexicon Devil<\/em>, la biograf\u00eda de Darby Crash de los Germs escrita por Brendan Mullen. Sheridan acaba subiendo al escenario mientras la banda toca Suck My Kiss<\/em> y lo entrega. Rude ya hab\u00eda dirigido Catholic School Girls Rule<\/em> en los ochenta y la pel\u00edcula en directo Off the Map<\/em>. Conoc\u00eda el chiste que la banda estaba dispuesta a repetir.<\/p>\n

La letra es Kiedis en una persecuci\u00f3n: una cara elegante y cansada, una caza, un verso sobre las ganas de colocarse, y un estribillo que dice que gana a largo plazo. En 2002 llevaba fuera de la hero\u00edna desde 2000. La canci\u00f3n no explica la recuperaci\u00f3n. Conserva el vocabulario viejo y lo pone contra los acordes m\u00e1s claros de Frusciante. Rolling Stone, al rese\u00f1ar el disco en julio de 2002, oye psicodelia a lo Beatles en la voz y mete el tema entre los que pod\u00edan quedarse con la radio del verano, junto a This Is the Place<\/em> y Midnight<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Despu\u00e9s del sencillo, la canci\u00f3n se queda en dos paquetes oficiales. Est\u00e1 en Greatest Hits<\/em> (noviembre de 2003) y en Live in Hyde Park<\/em>, grabado en los tres conciertos de Londres de junio de 2004. Nunca rompi\u00f3 una lista en Estados Unidos. Fue la que cerr\u00f3 la campa\u00f1a de By the Way<\/em> en los pa\u00edses que a\u00fan quer\u00edan otro sencillo, con un v\u00eddeo que solo se entiende si ya has visto la carrera en taxi. El libro se devuelve. El disco llevaba once meses fuera.<\/p>\n
