Track five is <em>Hang on to Your IQ<\/em>, recorded at Westland Studios in Dublin over roughly two weeks in spring 1996, then mixed back in London. Brad Wood produced; Ed Kenehan engineered. The lineup is Brian Molko (vocals, guitar), Stefan Olsdal (bass, guitar, keys), and drummer Robert Schultzberg, the only Placebo album with him before he left the group.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The band had just signed after the Deceptive Records single <em>Come Home<\/em>. Dublin gave them a short, focused session: ten songs that run from brittle glam energy to slower, more exposed writing. <em>Hang on to Your IQ<\/em> sits after <em>36 Degrees<\/em> and before the hit single <em>Nancy Boy<\/em>. At about five minutes thirteen, it is one of the longer cuts on the record, and Molko later called it the most story-like song on the album.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What you hear is a calm-to-tense build: dry guitars, a steady drum pattern, and Molko&#8217;s high voice narrating a character who cannot hold himself together. The chorus repeats a plea to hang on to IQ and id &#8211; mind and instinct &#8211; while the verses sketch loneliness, substances, and sexual self-doubt. Images of a Chinese masseuse, bingo numbers, and breakfast smoke pile up like scenes from a bad night that will not end. Molko told the NME the person in the song is so self-conscious they cannot operate properly. He also told Vox the brutal line about feeling small was about the character&#8217;s low self-esteem, not a macho boast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Placebo had formed in London in 1994 when Molko and Olsdal met by chance at South Kensington station. By 1996 they already had a sharp visual identity and a willingness to put fragile lyrics next to loud guitars. <em>Hang on to Your IQ<\/em> is where that honesty is least dressed up as a single: no tidy radio edit, no guest feature, just the trio and Wood&#8217;s room sound.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=\u00bb.vc_custom_1453719644035{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}\u00bb][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That&#8217;s the most story-like song on the album. France certified it strongly as well. Singles like <em>Nancy Boy<\/em> and <em>36 Degrees<\/em> carried the band onto television; <em>Hang on to Your IQ<\/em> stayed an album deep cut that fans still cite for how openly Molko wrote about shame and craving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Start with the 1996 Hut\/Elevator album take. No remaster slogan changes what Westland captured: three musicians, Brad Wood&#8217;s clear production, and a lyric that refuses rock swagger.
