En la primavera de 1971, Marvin Gaye deja de pedirle a Motown otra canci\u00f3n de amor y hace una pregunta m\u00e1s dura, una que el sello no quiere en la radio. What’s Going On<\/em> no empieza tanto con un acento como con una habitaci\u00f3n. Las voces se superponen, una fiesta ya empezada, un saxo calentando como si nadie hubiera dado la toma. Luego llega la voz, cerca, casi conversada, un hombre que habla a la gente de la sala en lugar de actuar para ella. Publicado el 21 de mayo de 1971, el \u00e1lbum suena a Detroit despu\u00e9s de que el sue\u00f1o de los sesenta se ha adelgazado, a\u00fan elegante, ya no inocente.<\/p>\n

La canci\u00f3n que da t\u00edtulo espera desde 1970. Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)<\/em> mira el cielo y el agua como si tambi\u00e9n fueran parientes. Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)<\/em> cierra con facturas, impuestos y un gatillo que no se queda en el peri\u00f3dico. Es la prueba de que el serm\u00f3n ocurre en una sala donde la gente todav\u00eda habla, todav\u00eda sirve de beber, todav\u00eda est\u00e1 viva. El groove nunca grita. Esa es la disciplina. La rabia, aqu\u00ed, est\u00e1 arreglada. La ecolog\u00eda, la guerra y el alquiler llegan en la misma voz de terciopelo, y el terciopelo no los cancela.
