Nicolas Godin and Jean-Beno\u00eet Dunckel built the songs themselves at Revolvair in Paris, with engineer Yann Arnaud on the first passes. After the denser, more abrasive <em>10 000 Hz Legend<\/em> (2001), they cut external band clutter and played nearly every part: piano, synths, guitar, bass, programmed drums, soft vocals. Nigel Godrich later joined for additional recording, production, and mixing at Ocean Way in Hollywood. Michel Colombier arranged the strings. Bob Ludwig mastered at Gateway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The opener <em>Venus<\/em> sets a patient pulse under filtered pads and a near-whisper vocal. <em>Cherry Blossom Girl<\/em> carries the album&rsquo;s clearest pop hook, a mid-tempo glide that radio could play without losing the duo&rsquo;s cool distance. <em>Surfing on a Rocket<\/em> pushes a brighter motorik feel; <em>Alpha Beta Gaga<\/em> hinges on a whistled motif that reportedly began as a sketch offered toward Madonna before finding its home here. Acoustic piano sits more forward than on <em>Moon Safari<\/em>, while vocoder and thick analog stacks stay in supporting roles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Godin and Dunckel treated delay and reverb as instruments. Their AKG BX20 spring lived on almost every track; when they needed stereo bloom, Dunckel reached for a Lexicon 200 preset rather than a plug-in. Godrich&rsquo;s Hollywood pass added polish and street atmospheres on selected cuts without burying the Paris skeletons. The record feels intimate and arranged at once: fewer guests than Legend, more melody than homework-era chill-out pastiche.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cover art by Richard Prince, with Claude Gassian photography, matched the cooler, notebook-like mood of the music: equations and polaroids instead of lounge kitsch. Live, the duo could stretch these songs without losing the recorded shapes. Metacritic averaged in the mid-70s across dozens of reviews; NME praised the tender, synthetic-soul balance after Legend&rsquo;s harder edges. Singles <em>Cherry Blossom Girl<\/em>, <em>Surfing on a Rocket<\/em>, and <em>Alpha Beta Gaga<\/em> carried the campaign. <em>Alone in Kyoto<\/em>, already known from Sofia Coppola&rsquo;s <em>Lost in Translation<\/em> soundtrack, closes the album as a quiet coda listeners already associated with hotel corridors and jet lag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Twenty years on, <em>Talkie Walkie<\/em> is the Air album people reach for when they want songs rather than only atmosphere. It bridges the debut&rsquo;s charm and the later chamber-electronic work without repeating either. The Hollywood finish matters, but the core decisions were made in Paris: two musicians, fewer collaborators, hooks that still sound handmade.
