Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl cut basic tracks live in the room. Albini&rsquo;s dry, abrasive mix was the point after the stadium polish of <em>Nevermind<\/em>: guitars harsh, drums upfront, vocals often low in the stereo field. Rumors that Geffen hated the tapes leaked into the press; the band and label still shipped the album, with Bob Ludwig mastering for more clarity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Serve the Servants<\/em> opens with Cobain&rsquo;s line about teenage angst having paid off well. <em>Scentless Apprentice<\/em> hammers a riff Grohl started; <em>Heart-Shaped Box<\/em> and <em>All Apologies<\/em> became the singles after Scott Litt remixed them at Bad Animals in Seattle in May 1993, with Cobain adding guitar and backing vocals. The rest of the Albini mixes stayed. <em>Rape Me<\/em>, <em>Dumb<\/em>, <em>Pennyroyal Tea<\/em>, <em>Milk It<\/em>, and <em>Radio Friendly Unit Shifter<\/em> keep the program short and mean. Anton Corbijn&rsquo;s video for <em>Heart-Shaped Box<\/em> used medical props and a hospital bed that later followed the band on tour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Retail drama chased the artwork. Some big-box US chains balked at Cobain&rsquo;s fetus collage on the back cover and at the title <em>Rape Me<\/em>; alternate packaging and the retitle <em>Waif Me<\/em> appeared in those outlets. None of that stopped the chart week. For Nirvana the compromise was tactical: keep the album body harsh, give radio two cleaner singles. Within months Cobain was gone, and <em>In Utero<\/em> froze as the last studio statement, later expanded in anniversary boxes that finally published unused Albini mixes of the singles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What lasts is the refusal to repeat <em>Nevermind<\/em>&lsquo;s gloss.
