Une figure de piano simple, puis Chris Martin qui pose la question nette : et si tu d\u00e9cides que tu ne me veux plus l\u00e0. What If<\/em> est le deuxi\u00e8me titre de X&Y<\/em> (2005), juste apr\u00e8s l’ouverture grand \u00e9cran Square One<\/em>. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 celui-ci annon\u00e7ait l’\u00e9chelle, celui-ci ralentit la pi\u00e8ce et rend le doute audible. Des lignes de falsetto survolent un mix qui ajoute basse, batterie et guitare par \u00e9tapes soign\u00e9es jusqu’au dernier refrain, qui d\u00e9pense le volume gagn\u00e9. On entend l’arrangement d\u00e9cider, mesure apr\u00e8s mesure, combien de poids le texte peut porter.<\/p>\n

Le texte lit comme une suite de The Scientist<\/em> : peur de perdre la personne dont on a besoin, aveu que chaque pas peut \u00eatre une erreur, et choix de prendre le risque quand m\u00eame. Les sessions de X&Y<\/em> courent de 2004 au d\u00e9but 2005 dans des salles comme AIR, Parr Street, Sarm West et Townhouse, avec Danton Supple et le groupe parmi les producteurs apr\u00e8s que le mat\u00e9riel Ken Nelson a largement \u00e9t\u00e9 mis de c\u00f4t\u00e9. What If<\/em> garde l’ADN piano-first du Coldplay d’avant tout en cherchant le cadre st\u00e9r\u00e9o plus large que l’album chase. La radio britannique se concentre sur Speed of Sound<\/em> et Fix You<\/em>. Placez What If<\/em> entre Square One<\/em> et White Shadows<\/em> et le rythme du disque reprend sens : annoncer, douter, puis avancer. La question du titre n’obtient jamais de r\u00e9ponse nette.
