Puis le motif de toms de Will Champion, emprunt\u00e9 dans l’esprit \u00e0 Running Up That Hill<\/em> de Kate Bush, pousse le couplet pendant qu’un pad de synth\u00e9 tient l’air. Speed of Sound<\/em> \u00e9tait le lead single de X&Y<\/em> : premi\u00e8re radio sur l’\u00e9mission de Steve Lamacq \u00e0 BBC Radio 1 le 18 avril 2005, sortie digitale le lendemain, CD et vinyle UK le 23 mai avec en faces B Things I Don’t Understand<\/em> et Proof<\/em>. D\u00e8s le premier refrain, on entend pourquoi Parlophone a mis\u00e9 dessus : large, clair, fait pour voyager.<\/p>\n

Chris Martin a dit que la chanson est venue apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9cout\u00e9 Bush et apr\u00e8s la naissance de sa fille Apple, en cherchant \u00ab awe and wonderment \u00bb avec des emprunts que le groupe n’a pas cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 cacher. On l’a aussi cit\u00e9 comme le milliardi\u00e8me t\u00e9l\u00e9chargement achet\u00e9 sur l’iTunes Store, une note de bas de page du milieu des ann\u00e9es 2000 qui dit encore jusqu’o\u00f9 le single a voyag\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Mark Romanek a tourn\u00e9 le clip sur un plateau de Los Angeles en deux jours d’avril 2005, le groupe jouant devant un mur LED courbe de centaines de tubes Element Labs anim\u00e9s surtout depuis la piste vocale de Martin. Le clip a r\u00e9colt\u00e9 des nominations MTV VMA et une rotation lourde. Des ann\u00e9es plus tard, Martin s’est refroidi sur le morceau, disant aux journalistes qu’ils \u00ab ne l’avaient jamais bien r\u00e9ussi \u00bb et que le public sent quand un groupe n’y croit pas.
