Then David Bowie doubles on harmonica, Trevor Bolder and Woody Woodmansey lock a straight rock pocket, and <em>Cracked Actor<\/em> opens the second side of April 1973&rsquo;s <em>Aladdin Sane<\/em>, cut with the Spiders from Mars and co-produced with Ken Scott for RCA. In about three minutes the lyric sketches an aging Hollywood star and a hustler economy: Sunset, pills, and a transaction that is not romance. You hear a band that has already toured Ziggy into exhaustion and still wants the riff to hit like a bar-band set, not a costume cue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bowie wrote the song after the U.S. Ziggy tours, when Los Angeles and the star system were already in his notebooks. On <em>Aladdin Sane<\/em> it sits between the album&rsquo;s piano dramatics and its harder rock cuts, a direct Spiders performance without the soap-opera grandeur of <em>Time<\/em> or the doo-wop pastiche of <em>Drive-In Saturday<\/em>. Ken Scott&rsquo;s desk keeps the mix close: guitar forward, harmonica cutting the middle, rhythm section refusing to soften for the celebrity scene the words describe. The contrast is the point. Hollywood rot told with British rock muscle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The title stuck beyond the album. Alan Yentob&rsquo;s 1975 BBC documentary on Bowie&rsquo;s American tour borrowed the name <em>Cracked Actor<\/em>. Live, the song returned on the 1974 Diamond Dogs \/ Soul tour and on <em>David Live<\/em>. Official archives later issued a 4K Hammersmith Odeon 1973 performance of the track, Ziggy&rsquo;s last London stand before the character was retired. Fans who only know the lightning-bolt cover still get surprised by how blunt the side-two opener feels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Three minutes. One deal. No soft focus. Press play for Ronson&rsquo;s first chords, then stay for how cleanly Bowie&rsquo;s harmonica and the lyric&rsquo;s cold transaction share the same air.
