Bowie cut an earlier version with Arnold Corns, his short-lived project built around dress designer Freddie Burretti as a frontman figure. The Spiders take, with Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Woody Woodmansey, is the one that stuck: short, fast, and built for the stage. Two and a half minutes of forward motion before the next Ziggy tableau arrives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ken Scott and Bowie keep the production dry and forward. Ronson&rsquo;s guitar riffs nod at Chuck Berry while the glam snare keeps the pulse jumping. The lyric sketches a rock-and-roll seduction with leftover Velvet Underground attitude in the stance more than in the chords. Come out onto the floor, leave your boyfriend, hang on to yourself. It is a set-piece designed to move a room before the concept songs take over. You can shout over it without needing the alien mythology explained first.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On tour the track often sat among the hard, short Spiders numbers that framed the story cuts. Bootlegs and later official live releases show how little padding it needed. The riff does the work; the chorus doubles as advice; the band treats the glam look as armour for a bar-band engine. That is the point of hearing it beside <em>Five Years<\/em> or <em>Starman<\/em>: Ziggy was a rock band first, then a narrative, then a costume.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Punk and glam revival bands kept the song in set lists because the structure forgives volume. It does not ask for the messenger poetry of <em>Starman<\/em> or the doom of <em>Five Years<\/em>. It asks for speed and a chorus you can bark between jumps. The Spiders version turns Chuck Berry drive into glam punch without losing the dancefloor brief.
