L’homme \u00e0 t\u00eate de chou<\/em> arrived on Philips on 18 November 1976. Serge Gainsbourg cut most of it at Mercury Studios in London between mid-August and mid-September, with Philippe Lerichomme producing and Alan Hawkshaw arranging. The concept album follows a man in his forties who falls for Marilou, a shampoo girl at Max’s men’s salon, then slides from lust into jealousy, murder and a psychiatric ward where he believes his head has become a cabbage. It is the grim cousin of Histoire de Melody Nelson<\/em>: spoken narration, rock band, no soft landing.<\/p>\n

The sequence is theatrical and short. Title track, then Chez Max coiffeur pour hommes<\/em>, Marilou Reggae<\/em> (Gainsbourg’s first reggae tilt, still essentially pop), Transit \u00e0 Marilou<\/em>, Flash Forward<\/em>, A\u00e9roplanes<\/em>, Premiers sympt\u00f4mes<\/em>. Side two pushes further: Ma Lou Marilou<\/em>, the long Variations sur Marilou<\/em>, the extinguisher murder of Meurtre \u00e0 l’extincteur<\/em>, Marilou sous la neige<\/em>, and the asylum closer Lunatic Asylum<\/em>. Styles jump on purpose: reggae sketch, funk bounce, organ drone, country tint, disco flicker. Subject and sound are often mismatched on purpose, cheerful grooves under ugly thoughts.<\/p>\n

On release the record drew less heat than Melody Nelson. Later listeners treated it as one of Gainsbourg’s key 1970s statements, the bridge toward the Jamaican sessions of Aux armes et c\u00e6tera<\/em>. The cabbage-head image on the sleeve matches the narrator’s final delusion: cartoon horror sold as high art. Jean-Claude Vannier is not the architect here; Hawkshaw’s charts and Lerichomme’s control room keep the story moving across twelve cuts in just over half an hour.<\/p>\n

Put the title track on and the spoken grain is already halfway to reggae cadence. By Marilou Reggae<\/em> the experiment is explicit; by Lunatic Asylum<\/em> the percussion and organ have locked the narrator inside. Stage adaptations and later covers kept the story in circulation long after the 1976 shrug.<\/p>\n

What sticks is the narrative nerve. Gainsbourg uses genre hops as plot devices, not decoration. L’homme \u00e0 t\u00eate de chou<\/em> remains the album where French rock concept writing went X-rated without dropping the poetry, and where a cabbage became a career landmark.<\/p>\n
