Le 13 f\u00e9vrier 1984, Motown sort Hello<\/em>, troisi\u00e8me single du deuxi\u00e8me album solo de Lionel Richie, Can’t Slow Down<\/em>. Richie a \u00e9crit la chanson et l’a produite avec James Anthony Carmichael, l’arrangeur qui travaillait avec lui depuis les ann\u00e9es Commodores chez Motown. L’enregistrement date de 1983. Le single dure 4 minutes 8. La face B est You Mean More to Me<\/em>. Richie avait \u00e9crit la ballade plus t\u00f4t et l’avait laiss\u00e9e hors de son premier album solo. Sa femme d’alors, Brenda Harvey Richie, l’a pouss\u00e9 \u00e0 la mettre sur le deuxi\u00e8me.<\/p>\n

Hello<\/em> est la chanson lente d’un disque qui contient aussi All Night Long (All Night)<\/em> et Running with the Night<\/em>. Le morceau repose sur une pulsation douce, la voix proche, et un refrain r\u00e9duit \u00e0 un mot et une question : \u00ab Is it me you’re looking for? \u00bb C’est une ballade quiet storm construite pour la radio pop, ce qui explique qu’elle ait pu mener en m\u00eame temps le classement R&B, le Adult Contemporary et le Hot 100. Can’t Slow Down<\/em> avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9marr\u00e9 en octobre 1983. Hello<\/em> est le single qui a transform\u00e9 l’album, d’un succ\u00e8s dansant, en ballade que les gens r\u00e9clamaient.<\/p>\n

Bob Giraldi r\u00e9alise le clip. Il avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait Beat It de Michael Jackson et Running with the Night<\/em> de Richie. Hello<\/em> n’illustre pas vraiment le texte : il invente un court film autour. Richie joue un professeur de th\u00e9\u00e2tre, Mr. Reynolds. Laura Carrington joue une \u00e9tudiante aveugle de la classe. Giraldi a dit \u00e0 Richie que l’histoire \u00e9tait la sienne, pas celle du chanteur. En Grande-Bretagne, il est rest\u00e9 six semaines num\u00e9ro 1 pendant que l’hiver passait au printemps, avant le pic am\u00e9ricain. Les cinq singles de Can’t Slow Down<\/em> sont entr\u00e9s dans le Top 10 am\u00e9ricain. L’album a ensuite remport\u00e9 l’Album of the Year aux Grammy Awards en 1985.<\/p>\n

Trente ans plus tard, Richie expliquait encore la t\u00eate d’argile. Dans une interview \u00e0 Billboard en 2014, il raconte avoir demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Giraldi, plus d’une fois, de regarder le buste parce qu’il ne lui ressemblait pas. La r\u00e9ponse de Giraldi \u00e9tait l’intrigue : elle est aveugle, donc une ressemblance parfaite aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 la mauvaise histoire. Richie s’est tenu \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la t\u00eate et a chant\u00e9 le dernier refrain quand m\u00eame. La chanson a surv\u00e9cu au sketch. Hello<\/em> reste la ballade que l’on entend quand on dit Lionel Richie en 1984 : Motown, un tempo lent, et un refrain qui n’est qu’une salutation.<\/p>\n
