The self-titled Supergrass (1999) went to UK No.1 with \u00ab\u00a0Pumping on Your Stereo\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0Moving\u00a0\u00bb. In 2010 the band announced it was over after a farewell run that ended at the Oxegen and V festivals. Coombes did not stop. Coombes wrote and played most of the parts again, with a wider dynamic range: acoustic passages, falsetto, guitars that cut without Britpop pastiche. The Mercury Prize shortlist followed. World&rsquo;s Strongest Man (2018) kept the line honest with mid-tempo rock and lyrics that sound like notes from a working life rather than slogans. Turn the Car Around (2023) arrived after Supergrass reunion shows that filled theatres without cancelling the solo calendar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What separates Coombes from a nostalgia circuit is simple. He kept writing after the band that made him famous. The Supergrass reunion tours of the 2020s sit beside the solo albums without cancelling them. He is finishing sentences he started in Wheatley with better tools and fewer committee meetings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Compared with Damon Albarn&rsquo;s genre-hopping or Noel Gallagher&rsquo;s anthem machine, Coombes stays closer to the song as a finished object: fewer headlines, more arrangement detail. The sideburns stayed as a trademark; the arrangements grew teeth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The live show is still the test. Coombes plays guitar, sings high and low, and leaves room for the band to hit hard on the choruses. Festival slots and theatre dates both work because the material scales: a quiet verse, then a refrain that fills the room.
