Karl Hyde and Rick Smith worked through 80s projects before the early-90s reset that made the name synonymous with long electronic tracks. With Darren Emerson joining on decks and production, the trio locked a method: rolling techno and house grooves, Hyde&rsquo;s spoken-sung vocals, and arrangements that refused the three-minute radio edit as the main product.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dubnobasswithmyheadman (1994) on Junior Boy&rsquo;s Own set the template. Tracks stretched, basslines stayed hypnotic, and Hyde&rsquo;s phrases circled rather than resolved like a verse-chorus pop song. Second Toughest in the Infants (1996) pushed further. \u00ab\u00a0Born Slippy .NUXX\u00a0\u00bb became the cultural peak after Trainspotting (1996) used it: a pounding kick, a drunken vocal loop, and a film association that put Underworld in living rooms far from club culture. The single charted hard in the UK and became a festival demand for decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beaucoup Fish (1999) kept the scale with \u00ab\u00a0Push Upstairs\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0Jumbo.\u00a0\u00bb Emerson left around 2000. Hyde and Smith continued as a duo, still writing long forms and still treating the live PA as a primary instrument. Two Months Off (from A Hundred Days Off, 2002) showed they could still cut a bright, melodic club single without abandoning the extended structure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oblivion with Bells (2007), Barking (2010), and later albums kept the pair active across club circuits and art-world collaborations. Work with director Danny Boyle and other visual projects reinforced the film link that Born Slippy started. The Tomato design collective, tied to Hyde and Smith, also framed the band&rsquo;s visual identity: stark typography, abstract imagery, no rock-band posing required.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sonically, Underworld sit between techno discipline and songwriting instinct. Smith builds the chassis: kicks, sequencers, filters. Hyde drops fragmentary lyrics that feel overheard in a night out rather than written for a ballad. Emerson&rsquo;s era added DJ timing and extra low-end pressure. That made them useful to film editors and festival bookers who needed a track that could escalate for eight minutes without collapsing into a simple drop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">DJs still open or close sets with Born Slippy when they want an instant crowd recognition hit. Techno historians still point to Dubnobasswithmyheadman as a UK album statement. Live bills still book Hyde and Smith because the duo format still delivers volume and detail at once.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Start with Second Toughest in the Infants for the Trainspotting-era peak. Add Dubnobasswithmyheadman for the debut statement. Beaucoup Fish and A Hundred Days Off show the late-90s into early-00s continuation.
