Paul Humphreys chante Secret<\/em>. Andy McCluskey, non. C’est la premi\u00e8re chose que le disque fait autrement que les singles d’OMD que le public connaissait d\u00e9j\u00e0. La chanson est le deuxi\u00e8me single de Crush<\/em>, l’album qu’Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark sort chez Virgin en juin 1985, et elle para\u00eet en Grande-Bretagne le 8 juillet 1985.<\/p>\n

McCluskey et Humphreys l’ont \u00e9crite. Stephen Hague la produit avec le groupe. Crush<\/em> est construit sur un Fairlight, avec le s\u00e9quenceur Page R de la machine, et des batteries live ajout\u00e9es ensuite. Les s\u00e9ances se font aux studios Amazon \u00e0 Liverpool et au Manor dans l’Oxfordshire, les mix \u00e0 Advision \u00e0 Londres. Hague joue lui-m\u00eame des parties. Humphreys dira plus tard qu’apr\u00e8s Hague le duo a cess\u00e9 de prendre un producteur ext\u00e9rieur, parce que les deux camps voulaient tenir la s\u00e9ance. Sur Secret<\/em>, le contr\u00f4le est encore celui de Hague, et la voix principale est encore celle de Paul.<\/p>\n

Le mot du titre n’est pas chant\u00e9 seulement par lui. Maureen Humphreys, la femme de Paul, est sampl\u00e9e en train de dire \u00ab\u00a0secret\u00a0\u00bb, et ce souffle sert d’accroche dans le morceau. La face B britannique est Drift<\/em>. Le single am\u00e9ricain, chez A&M, met Firegun<\/em> \u00e0 la place. Andy Morahan tourne le clip \u00e0 Walton-on-the-Naze, dans l’Essex : des plans en noir et blanc, dont des images des Beatles, coup\u00e9s avec Humphreys qui chante et une petite histoire o\u00f9 McCluskey regarde le couple puis s’\u00e9loigne le long de la plage.<\/p>\n

Rien de grave, au fond, et ces petits airs fl\u00fbt\u00e9s et ces m\u00e9lodies de premier de la classe remplacent tr\u00e8s bien le fromage blanc. \u00c9tonnamment agr\u00e9able.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Aux \u00c9tats-Unis, c’est la deuxi\u00e8me entr\u00e9e du groupe au Billboard Hot 100, avec un pic \u00e0 63, et il entre aussi au classement adult contemporary. L’Allemagne de l’Ouest le place 25e. Aucun de ces chiffres n’\u00e9gale If You Leave<\/em>, qui est encore \u00e0 un an, mais Secret<\/em> est le disque qui montre l’OMD de Hague \u00e0 la radio : programm\u00e9, chant\u00e9 par Humphreys, et vis\u00e9 plus loin que les clubs.<\/p>\n

La compilation qui rangera plus tard la chanson n’est pas le sujet. Secret<\/em> appartient \u00e0 Crush<\/em>, \u00e0 Amazon et au Manor en 1984 et 1985, et \u00e0 un duo qui a donn\u00e9 le chant au clavi\u00e9riste pendant qu’un producteur programmait le Fairlight. Smash Hits entend la m\u00e9lodie fl\u00fbt\u00e9e et traite de nouveau le groupe de mauviettes assum\u00e9es. Le classement ne discute pas tr\u00e8s fort. Il laisse le single dans les trente et passe \u00e0 autre chose. So in Love avait \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier single de l’album et avait atteint la 27e place en Grande-Bretagne. Secret l’a suivi sur la tourn\u00e9e Crush en 1985 et 1986. En 1988, la chanson appara\u00eet dans Arthur 2: On the Rocks et revient sur les radios am\u00e9ricaines, sans rentrer au Hot 100.
