Le dimanche 21 janvier 1973, Clare Torry a chant\u00e9 la voix sans paroles de The Great Gig in the Sky<\/em> \u00e0 Abbey Road, pour un cachet de 30 livres. Alan Parsons, l’ing\u00e9nieur, avait demand\u00e9 une chanteuse. Le morceau en studio \u00e9tait celui de Rick Wright : une suite d’accords lente, pas de paroles, pas de m\u00e9lodie \u00e9crite. Pink Floyd terminait The Dark Side of the Moon<\/em>. Le groupe a produit le disque. Parsons l’a enregistr\u00e9. Harvest l’a sorti aux \u00c9tats-Unis le 1er mars 1973 et en Grande-Bretagne le 16 mars. Torry \u00e9tait chanteuse de s\u00e9ance \u00e0 Londres. Elle a failli ne pas prendre le rendez-vous.<\/p>\n

David Gilmour est celui qui lui a parl\u00e9. Il a demand\u00e9 quelque chose d’\u00e9motionnel. Elle a commenc\u00e9 par les ooh et les yeah de ses autres s\u00e9ances. Le groupe l’a arr\u00eat\u00e9e. Ils ont dit que s’ils avaient voulu \u00e7a, ils auraient pris Doris Troy. Elle a essay\u00e9 des notes plus longues, puis a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de traiter sa voix comme un instrument de plus. Pas de mots. Elle a chant\u00e9 deux prises compl\u00e8tes. Gilmour a demand\u00e9 que la deuxi\u00e8me soit encore plus \u00e9motionnelle. Au milieu d’une troisi\u00e8me, elle s’est arr\u00eat\u00e9e et leur a dit qu’ils en avaient assez. La voix du disque est mont\u00e9e \u00e0 partir de ces prises, sur l’orgue et le piano de Wright.<\/p>\n

Dans la r\u00e9gie, personne n’a dit grand-chose. Elle a pris les 30 livres, est all\u00e9e d\u00eener avec son petit ami, et a pens\u00e9 que la prise serait jet\u00e9e. Elle l’avait r\u00e9\u00e9cout\u00e9e et trouvait que \u00e7a ressemblait \u00e0 des miaulements. En mars, elle a achet\u00e9 l’album et a vu son nom sur la pochette. Le morceau ferme la face A, apr\u00e8s Time<\/em>. Les accords de Wright restent lents. Sa voix monte sans paroles auxquelles se tenir. Nick Mason et Roger Waters tiennent une pulsation simple en dessous. Il n’y a pas de solo de guitare comme sur Time<\/em>. La partie, c’est la voix.<\/p>\n

Pendant des ann\u00e9es, le cr\u00e9dit d’auteur \u00e9tait celui de Wright seul. En 2005, Torry a trouv\u00e9 un accord avec le groupe, et le morceau est cr\u00e9dit\u00e9 Wright et Torry depuis. Elle a dit qu’elle avait honte de ce son, et qu’elle \u00e9tait surprise de pouvoir chanter aussi haut. Dans les autres s\u00e9ances, elle prenait en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral l’harmonie grave. Parsons l’avait appel\u00e9e parce qu’elle \u00e9tait libre et connue, pas parce qu’une ligne de chant \u00e9tait \u00e9crite. Le chant utile tient dans ce dimanche soir. C’est elle qui a coup\u00e9 la troisi\u00e8me prise, quand \u00e7a commen\u00e7ait \u00e0 sonner calcul\u00e9 plut\u00f4t que trouv\u00e9 sur le moment.<\/p>\n

Les accords \u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans la suite jou\u00e9e en concert avant qu’elle n’entre, comme instrumental de Wright. Ce que le disque garde, c’est la m\u00e9lodie qu’elle a invent\u00e9e dans la pi\u00e8ce, sans partition devant elle. Les remasters plus tardifs, y compris l’\u00e9dition 2011 qui porte ce m\u00eame enregistrement, ne remplacent pas la voix. Quand le groupe a rejou\u00e9 le morceau sur sc\u00e8ne, d’autres chanteuses ont pris la partie. La prise de l’album est celle d’Abbey Road, ce dimanche-l\u00e0.<\/p>\n
