L’Europe a eu le single. L’Am\u00e9rique avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 le titre d’album<\/h3>\n

Les Red Hot Chili Peppers jouent Universally Speaking<\/em> en public avant que l’album existe comme produit. Les archives de concerts datent la premi\u00e8re fois du 18 ao\u00fbt 2001, au V Festival de Stafford. By the Way<\/em> n’arrivera en magasin que le 9 juillet 2002. Entre-temps, le morceau est pass\u00e9 par Cello Studios, \u00e0 Los Angeles, o\u00f9 Rick Rubin enregistre l’album d’octobre 2001 \u00e0 mai 2002. Les quatre auteurs sont les m\u00eames que sur le reste du disque: Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante, Chad Smith. Le titre dure 4:19. La guitare de Frusciante est m\u00e9lodique et claire, plus proche des refrains de cet album que du funk claqu\u00e9 de 1991, et son chant d’harmonie se place \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de Kiedis, pas derri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

Warner Bros. n’en fait pas un single am\u00e9ricain. By the Way<\/em>, The Zephyr Song<\/em>, Can’t Stop<\/em> et Dosed<\/em> ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 port\u00e9 l’album sur les radios des \u00c9tats-Unis. Universally Speaking<\/em> sort comme quatri\u00e8me et dernier single, seulement en Europe et en Australie, le 16 juin 2003. Le classement britannique le fait entrer le 28 juin au num\u00e9ro 27, son pic, puis il descend. Il atteint aussi le num\u00e9ro 5 du classement rock britannique, 42 en Irlande, 43 en Italie et 80 en Australie. XFM y voit une ode rock plut\u00f4t enlev\u00e9e. Le CD single porte un mix de John Frusciante, un By the Way<\/em> acoustique en concert et, sur une autre \u00e9dition, Slowly Deeply<\/em>, un reste plus ancien qui tra\u00eenait depuis l’\u00e8re Californication<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Le clip, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par Dick Rude, est une suite, pas un clip de performance. Dans la vid\u00e9o de By the Way<\/em>, Kiedis oublie un livre dans un taxi. Dave Sheridan, le m\u00eame passager d\u00e9traqu\u00e9, passe Universally Speaking<\/em> \u00e0 essayer de le rendre. Le livre est Lexicon Devil<\/em>, la biographie de Darby Crash des Germs par Brendan Mullen. Sheridan finit par monter sur sc\u00e8ne pendant que le groupe joue Suck My Kiss<\/em> et le tend. Rude avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 Catholic School Girls Rule<\/em> dans les ann\u00e9es 1980 et le film live Off the Map<\/em>. Il connaissait la blague que le groupe acceptait de r\u00e9p\u00e9ter.<\/p>\n

Les paroles montrent Kiedis \u00e0 la poursuite de quelqu’un: un visage \u00e9l\u00e9gant et fatigu\u00e9, une chasse, une ligne sur l’envie de se d\u00e9foncer, et un refrain qui affirme qu’il gagne sur la dur\u00e9e. En 2002, il est sorti de l’h\u00e9ro\u00efne depuis 2000. La chanson n’explique pas la convalescence. Elle garde l’ancien vocabulaire et le pose contre les accords plus clairs de Frusciante. Rolling Stone, en juillet 2002, entend un psych\u00e9d\u00e9lisme \u00e0 la Beatles dans la voix et range le titre parmi ceux qui peuvent tenir la radio de l’\u00e9t\u00e9, \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de This Is the Place<\/em> et Midnight<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s le single, le morceau reste dans deux coffrets officiels. Il est sur Greatest Hits<\/em> (novembre 2003) et sur Live in Hyde Park<\/em>, enregistr\u00e9 aux trois concerts de Londres en juin 2004. Il n’a jamais cass\u00e9 un classement aux \u00c9tats-Unis. C’est celui qui ferme la campagne de By the Way<\/em> dans les pays qui voulaient encore un single, avec un clip qui ne se comprend que si on a d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu la course en taxi. Le livre est rendu. L’album \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 sorti depuis onze mois.<\/p>\n
