The Garden, Shoreditch, \u00e9t\u00e9 1984 : le solo nocturne de Neil Clark<\/h3>\n

Le 17 ao\u00fbt 1984, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions sortent Forest Fire<\/em> chez Polydor. C’est le deuxi\u00e8me single de leur premier album Rattlesnakes<\/em>, publi\u00e9 le 12 octobre. Lloyd Cole a \u00e9crit le morceau. Paul Hardiman l’a produit \u00e0 The Garden, le studio de Shoreditch construit par John Foxx. La face B est Andy’s Babies<\/em>. Le single atteint la 41e place au Royaume-Uni et reste six semaines dans le top 75. En Nouvelle-Z\u00e9lande, il culmine \u00e0 la 25e place.<\/p>\n

Autour de Cole : Neil Clark \u00e0 la guitare, Blair Cowan aux claviers, Lawrence Donegan \u00e0 la basse et Stephen Irvine \u00e0 la batterie. Ils enregistrent l’album en environ un mois de sessions de journ\u00e9e : prises de base, repas \u00e0 Brick Lane, puis nouvelles prises. Clark enregistre le long solo de guitare en larsen de Forest Fire<\/em> tard un soir, exception \u00e0 ce rythme. Il marque le sol du studio \u00e0 la craie pour contr\u00f4ler le larsen. Hardiman et Polydor laissent assez le groupe travailler pour que les prises restent nettes et sans pr\u00e9cipitation.<\/p>\n

On entend d’abord un rythme calme et la voix de Cole qui raconte un d\u00e9sir en mots simples. Les claviers de Cowan soutiennent les guitares. Le solo de Clark arrive comme un second feu : des couches de guitare qui montent sans transformer le morceau en d\u00e9monstration. La version album dure environ quatre minutes et demie. Le groupe a d\u00e9j\u00e0 Perfect Skin<\/em> dans les charts ; Forest Fire<\/em> est le titre qui aligne juke-boxes d’unions \u00e9tudiantes et presse musicale. Les \u00e9ditions 12 pouces feront circuler des mixes plus longs ; la prise album de 1984 reste la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence. Les clin d’\u0153il litt\u00e9raires de Cole ailleurs sur Rattlesnakes<\/em> c\u00f4toient la guitare de Clark ; sur Forest Fire<\/em>, ce lyrisme de lecteur rencontre le solo le plus fort du disque.<\/p>\n

Rattlesnakes<\/em> entre dans le classement des albums britanniques \u00e0 la 13e place et y reste environ un an. Un troisi\u00e8me single, le titre \u00e9ponyme, suit en novembre. Les Commotions viennent de la sc\u00e8ne glasgowienne du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1980, mais enregistrent ce premier disque \u00e0 Londres, avec de la litt\u00e9rature dans les paroles et du jangle dans les guitares. La frange et le pull noir de Cole deviennent un raccourci pour cette ann\u00e9e autant que les disques. Radios \u00e9tudiantes et NME traitaient les Commotions comme une r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re vague des Smiths sans copier Manchester : section rythmique glasgowienne, studio londonien, diction anglaise de Cole.<\/p>\n

Partir de la prise album d’octobre 1984, pas d’une ligne marketing de remaster. L’int\u00e9r\u00eat de Forest Fire<\/em>, c’est la pi\u00e8ce \u00e0 The Garden, la production calme de Hardiman et Clark qui finit le solo apr\u00e8s les heures alors que le reste du groupe croit encore qu’un premier album peut se faire aussi simplement.<\/p>\n
