Real Records, late 1979: stage nerve in three minutes<\/h3>\n

On 9 November 1979, Real Records released Brass in Pocket<\/em> as the Pretenders’ third single, ahead of the January 1980 debut album Pretenders<\/em>. Chrissie Hynde and guitarist James Honeyman-Scott wrote it; Chris Thomas produced. The band is Hynde (vocals, guitar), Honeyman-Scott (guitar), Pete Farndon (bass), and Martin Chambers (drums). The US pressings came on Sire.<\/p>\n

The song began as a guitar figure Honeyman-Scott showed Hynde. She taped the part and wrote lyrics about the cockiness you need to walk on stage when you still feel small. The title came from an after-show dinner where she overheard someone ask about dry cleaning and \u00ab\u00a0brass in pocket\u00a0\u00bb – Northern English slang for money. \u00ab\u00a0Bottle\u00a0\u00bb in the lyric is Cockney rhyme for nerve. Hynde later said she was trying for a Motown feel that never quite arrived, which left the track in a lane of its own: new wave bounce with a soft, steady beat.<\/p>\n

What you hear is Chambers’s weighty but soft groove, Farndon’s rounded bass, Honeyman-Scott’s clean guitar figures, and Hynde singing \u00ab\u00a0I’m special\u00a0\u00bb with a slow smile rather than a shout. Thomas keeps the mix uncluttered so the vocal swagger can sit without force. Hynde first disliked her voice on the take and told Thomas he could release it over her dead body; she later admitted the song served her well even if the vocal still made her cringe.<\/p>\n

The tradition of Brass in Pocket is that you’re supposed to be kind of cocky and sure of yourself. You’re not supposed to go on stage and say, \u00ab\u00a0I’m small and I have no confidence.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The single entered the UK chart on 17 November 1979 and hit number one for two weeks in January 1980 – the first new UK number one of the decade. It also topped charts in Ireland, Sweden, and South Africa, reached number 2 in Australia and New Zealand, and peaked at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The cafe waitress video, filmed in North Kensington, was the seventh clip MTV aired on its 1 August 1981 launch day.<\/p>\n

Stay with the 1979 Real Records single \/ 1980 album take. Remaster campaigns do not change the session: Hynde and Honeyman-Scott’s writing, Thomas’s production, and a band that sounds sure of its step even when the singer claims she was not. That is the original Brass in Pocket<\/em>.<\/p>\n
