Avalon, 1982: Ferry stops singing, the synths keep walking<\/h3>\n

In March 1982, Roxy Music put out More Than This<\/em> as the first single from Avalon<\/em>, their eighth and final studio album. Bryan Ferry wrote the song. Rhett Davies and the band produced it; Bob Clearmountain mixed. Sessions for the album ran through 1981\u20131982 at Compass Point in Nassau, the Power Station in New York, and Gallery Studio in Chertsey. The album followed on 28 May 1982 on E.G. \/ Polydor.<\/p>\n

What you hear first is a soft pulse: Andy Newmark\u2019s drums, Alan Spenner\u2019s bass, Neil Hubbard and Phil Manzanera on guitar, Andy Mackay\u2019s saxophone kept low, Jimmy Maelen on percussion, Fonzi Thornton on backing vocals. Ferry\u2019s lead vocal sits clear and almost conversational. The unusual move is structural: his singing ends about a minute and forty-five seconds before the track does. The rest is a synthesizer-led instrumental outro that refuses a hard stop.<\/p>\n

Ferry has said he began writing the Avalon<\/em> songs on Ireland\u2019s west coast, and that the place shaped the album\u2019s darker, calmer mood. On the UK Singles Chart the single peaked at number 6 (first chart date 3 April 1982, eight weeks). It also reached the top 10 in Australia, Ireland, Norway, and Switzerland. In the United States it only touched the Billboard Rock Top Tracks chart at 58. The official video leans on cinema and silhouette rather than a loud arena stage.<\/p>\n

I began writing the songs for Avalon while on the west coast of Ireland, and I think that contributed to the dark melancholy of the album.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On Avalon<\/em> the song opens the record. It is soft rock and sophisti-pop in plain clothes: no shout, no guitar solo fight, just a finished vocal and a long electronic walk-out. Later covers (including 10,000 Maniacs and Bill Murray\u2019s karaoke scene in Lost in Translation<\/em>) kept the title in public; the Roxy Music cut remains the reference: Ferry, Davies, Clearmountain, and that deliberate silence where the singer leaves and the machines stay.<\/p>\n

A last UK Top 10 for the band as a unit. The vocal ends early. The track does not.<\/p>\n
