Much Love, 1997: D\u2019Influence frame a Crawford classic for UK R&B radio<\/h3>\n

On 7 April 1997, WEA issued You Might Need Somebody<\/em> by Shola Ama. The song was written by Tom Snow and Nan O\u2019Byrne; Turley Richards cut an early version, and Randy Crawford\u2019s 1981 recording made it a UK hit (No. 11). Ama\u2019s cover appears on her debut album Much Love<\/em>, released 1 September 1997 on Freakstreet \/ WEA. Production on this track is credited to D\u2019Influence. The album version runs about 4:51; the radio mix sits nearer 3:51.<\/p>\n

Ama was still a teenager when the single broke. The arrangement keeps a late-90s UK R&B \/ pop frame: programmed drums, warm bass, keyboards under a clear lead vocal, and a chorus built for daytime radio. It does not chase Crawford\u2019s jazz-club hush; it aims for British chart R&B of the moment. Jake Nava directed the video, which MTV put in heavy rotation.<\/p>\n

On the UK Singles Chart the single peaked at number 4 (first chart date 19 April 1997, 14 weeks). It also reached the top 10 in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, and No. 25 on the Eurochart Hot 100. Much Love<\/em> followed to number 6 on the UK Albums Chart. Other singles from the album (You\u2019re the One I Love<\/em>, Who\u2019s Loving My Baby<\/em>, the title track) kept Ama on British radio through the rest of 1997.<\/p>\n
