Horizon Studios 1979, first 2 Tone single<\/h3>\n

In January 1979, The Specials recorded Gangsters<\/em> at Horizon Studios in Coventry. Jerry Dammers wrote the song; the band produced it as Special A.K.A. The session cost about \u00a3700. Horace Panter later said the bass was so heavy that the cut had to be redone because it blew the needle out of the groove. Dammers overdubbed a bright piano line to balance the low end. Terry Hall sang two vocal takes, one bored and one angry, and the engineers mixed them together. Drummer John Bradbury had just replaced Silverton Hutchinson, so the classic lineup was locking in as the tape rolled.<\/p>\n

The track reworks Prince Buster’s 1964 ska hit Al Capone<\/em>. The new lyric turns the gangster image toward managers, bootleggers, and industry pressure. The line about Bernie Rhodes points at The Clash’s former manager, a sore subject around Coventry. Lynval Golding and Roddy Radiation handle the choppy guitar; Neville Staple adds toasting energy around Hall’s cool lead. What you hear is short, sharp, and built for dancing: ska rhythm, a firm bass, and a chorus that warns without slowing the beat. At under three minutes, it leaves no fat on the arrangement.<\/p>\n

In May 1979 a limited run of 5,000 copies went out stamped as The Special A.K.A. Gangsters vs. The Selecter<\/em>. The other side was an instrumental by Neol Davies, Bradbury, and Barry Jones that named the Selecter. Rough Trade helped push the first batch; John Peel played both sides on Radio 1 on 7 May. After Chrysalis agreed to distribute 2 Tone while leaving Dammers room to sign other bands, a wider pressing took Gangsters<\/em> to No. 6 in the UK in early September 1979. It was the first chart hit for The Specials and for the label that would soon carry Madness and The Beat. Continental charts in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands followed.<\/p>\n

The black-and-white Walt Jabsco figure and the wider 2 Tone look followed in the shops, but the single already carried the politics: a mixed Coventry band selling dance records against a tense late-70s Britain. Top of the Pops appearances and the debut album would widen the circle; this single is the spark that made the bidding war possible.<\/p>\n

Play the 1979 single before later remasters. Gangsters<\/em> is where British 2 Tone hits national radio, and where The Specials set their terms before the debut album and the packed television spots that followed.<\/p>\n
