Columbia 1978 debut, Lukather and Cheryl Lynn<\/h3>\n

On 10 October 1978, Columbia released Toto’s self-titled debut. Session players turned bandmates, they cut the album largely at Studio 55 in Hollywood between late 1977 and mid-1978, with extra work at Davlen and Sunset Sound. Track three is Georgy Porgy<\/em>, written by keyboardist David Paich. Steve Lukather sings the verses; Cheryl Lynn, then cutting her own Columbia debut with Paich involved, takes the chorus hook that twists the nursery rhyme Georgie Porgie<\/em>. Bobby Kimball, David Hungate, Steve Porcaro, and Jeff Porcaro fill out the classic first lineup around them.<\/p>\n

The groove sits between soft rock and Philadelphia-leaning soul. Jeff Porcaro later told Modern Drummer that the drum feel owed debts to Paul Humphrey, Earl Palmer, Ed Greene, and James Gadson. Lenny Castro adds congas and percussion; Jim Horn and Chuck Findley color the horns. Toto produced themselves. What you hear is polished studio playing without a cold edge: clear guitar from Lukather, warm keys from Paich and Steve Porcaro, and Lynn’s vocal lifting the refrain so the nursery-rhyme twist lands as adult R&B, not novelty.<\/p>\n

Issued as the album’s third single in April 1979 with Child’s Anthem<\/em> on the B-side, Georgy Porgy<\/em> reached No. 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 18 on the Hot R&B chart, plus No. 11 in New Zealand. For a band soon famous for rock radio hits such as Hold the Line<\/em>, it remained their strongest R&B showing. The promo video shows the band on a stage set; Lynn is heard on the record even when she is not always framed on camera. That crossover moment linked Toto to the same LA soul-pop circuit that powered Lynn’s Got to Be Real<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Beside Hold the Line<\/em> and I’ll Supply the Love<\/em>, this single showed Toto could cross formats without changing personnel. Paich’s writing and Lynn’s chorus tied the debut to radio that rock programmers alone would not have opened. Later hits went elsewhere; this one still marks the band’s widest early R&B reach.<\/p>\n
