Musicland Munich, Discovery’s disco board<\/h3>\n

In March and April 1979, Electric Light Orchestra recorded Last Train to London<\/em> at Musicland Studios in Munich with engineer Mack. Jeff Lynne wrote and produced the track for the album Discovery<\/em>, released on Jet Records in June 1979. Bev Bevan plays drums, Richard Tandy covers piano and synthesizers, Kelly Groucutt handles bass and backing vocals, and Louis Clark conducts the strings. Lynne later linked the lyric to years of Birmingham-to-London train rides for TV and radio dates. What you hear first is a steady dance bass and a clear chorus, closer to late-70s disco radio than to the denser rock of Out of the Blue<\/em>.<\/p>\n

On the album the song sits on side two, among the more dance-leaning cuts that earned Discovery<\/em> the nickname \u00ab\u00a0Disco Very.\u00a0\u00bb Lynne keeps the arrangement open: drums that mark a simple dance pulse, bass that stays in the foreground, and stacked vocals on the hook. The strings arrive as colour, not as a wall. At about four and a half minutes it has room for the refrain to return without rushing. Next to Shine a Little Love<\/em> and Don’t Bring Me Down<\/em>, it shows how ELO could write for the floor without dropping the group’s melodic stamp.<\/p>\n

In the UK, Jet issued the song on 9 November 1979 as a double A-side with Confusion<\/em>. The pairing peaked at No. 8 on the Official Singles Chart and spent ten weeks in the listing. Ireland took it to No. 9. In the United States the two sides were split: Confusion<\/em> came first, then Last Train to London<\/em> early in 1980, reaching No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 36 on Cash Box. Canada placed it at No. 28 on RPM. A promo video of the band performing the song later circulated with other Discovery<\/em> clips.<\/p>\n

Discovery<\/em> topped the UK albums chart and later went multi-platinum in the US. Four UK top-ten singles came off the LP when the double A-side is counted with the earlier hits. In 2002 Atomic Kitten sampled the hook on Be With You<\/em>, which reached No. 2 in Britain and sent a new audience back to the Munich cut.<\/p>\n
