Ivanhoe Martin arrive \u00e0 Kingston avec une chanson en t\u00eate et aucune intention de rester pauvre. The Harder They Come<\/em> de Perry Henzell, \u00e9crit avec Trevor Rhone et sorti en Jama\u00efque en 1972, d\u00e9tend le contour du hors-la-loi Rhyging en une fiction que Jimmy Cliff peut porter. Cliff, d\u00e9j\u00e0 une star avec des tubes derri\u00e8re lui, ne voulait pas du r\u00f4le. Henzell lui a dit qu’il \u00e9tait meilleur acteur que chanteur. Cliff, qui voulait jouer depuis l’\u00e9cole, a dit oui. Pendant le tournage, alors que le film s’appelait encore Hard Road to Travel<\/em>, il a \u00e9crit la chanson-titre en une nuit. Henzell l’a entendue le lendemain matin et a chang\u00e9 le nom du film.<\/p>\n

L’histoire est simple et m\u00e9chante. Un gar\u00e7on de la campagne enregistre un air, un producteur ne le paie pas, la ville offre la ganja et une arme, et les journaux font d’un homme accul\u00e9 une star. Les couleurs ne sont pas d\u00e9coratives. Elles sont la fa\u00e7on dont Kingston appara\u00eet quand la cam\u00e9ra cesse de s’excuser de la chaleur. Le patois reste dans la bouche de ceux qui le parlent. Les copies am\u00e9ricaines porteraient des sous-titres, petite humiliation et grand cadeau : l’\u00eele ne s’est pas traduite vers le bas. L’Ivan de Cliff est vaniteux, dr\u00f4le, effray\u00e9, et convaincu qu’un disque est une sorte de passeport. Le film ne le couronne ni ne le gronde. Il regarde la machine qui a besoin \u00e0 la fois de la chanson et du cadavre.<\/p>\n

La bande-son, r\u00e9unie pour Island, a fait le voyage dont le personnage r\u00eave. You Can Get It If You Really Want<\/em>, Many Rivers to Cross<\/em>, Sitting in Limbo<\/em> et The Harder They Come<\/em> de Cliff se tiennent \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de Pressure Drop<\/em> de Toots and the Maytals, de Rivers of Babylon<\/em> des Melodians, de Johnny Too Bad<\/em> des Slickers. Le reggae, pour un tr\u00e8s grand nombre d’oreilles hors de la Jama\u00efque, a commenc\u00e9 comme cette suite, pas comme un cours. L’album est entr\u00e9 dans les chambres d’\u00e9tudiants et les s\u00e9ances de minuit, et a fait du film un culte avant que les classements aient une \u00e9tag\u00e8re pour lui. Variety, en 1972, a entendu un rythme vif et un th\u00e8me social habill\u00e9 en conte familier. C’est exactement la coupe.<\/p>\n

Aux \u00c9tats-Unis, le film est devenu un film de minuit, le genre de s\u00e9rie qui b\u00e2tit une assembl\u00e9e plut\u00f4t qu’un week-end. On revenait pour les chansons et on restait pour l’insulte au centre : une industrie musicale qui ach\u00e8te une voix bon march\u00e9 et vend le mythe cher. Le jeu de Cliff est \u00e0 visage ouvert. Il laisse Ivan jouir de l’affiche de lui-m\u00eame. Henzell, qui connaissait l’\u00eele comme un natif et non comme un d\u00e9cor, refuse la carte postale. Les motos, la lumi\u00e8re de mer, l’\u00e9glise, la cabane d’enregistrement, appartiennent \u00e0 une ville qui travaille. Culte, ici, ne veut pas dire obscur. Cela veut dire un film qui a gard\u00e9 son public en \u00e9tant pr\u00e9cis.<\/p>\n

Les films de reggae plus tardifs, les documentaires, et la gloire mondiale de Bob Marley peuvent faire de The Harder They Come<\/em> un avant-propos. Ce n’est pas un avant-propos. C’est un objet complet : un r\u00e9cit criminel, une com\u00e9die musicale, une carte de Kingston, et un avertissement sur ce qui arrive quand une chanson est le seul bien qu’on laisse un homme poss\u00e9der. Cliff a \u00e9crit le refrain alors que les cam\u00e9ras \u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 lev\u00e9es. On entend encore la h\u00e2te dedans, et la h\u00e2te est le sujet.
