Des habits noirs, une voix de fer<\/h3>\n

L’homme en noir ne s’habillait pas pour le myst\u00e8re. Il s’habillait pour un serment. John R. Cash, n\u00e9 \u00e0 Kingsland, dans l’Arkansas, le 26 f\u00e9vrier 1932 et \u00e9lev\u00e9 dans la colonie du New Deal de Dyess, a appris t\u00f4t qu’une chanson pouvait \u00eatre un rapport: le coton, la crue, un fr\u00e8re tu\u00e9 par une scie. Chez Sun Records \u00e0 Memphis, \u00e0 partir de 1955, Sam Phillips le place devant la guitare boom-chicka de Luther Perkins et la voix arrive d\u00e9j\u00e0 plus vieille que le chanteur. Folsom Prison Blues<\/em>, I Walk the Line<\/em> en 1956, Cry! Cry! Cry!<\/em>: le baryton ne grimpe pas. Il se tient. Le Tennessee Two laisse de l’espace, et il le remplit sans ornement.<\/p>\n

Les ann\u00e9es soixante ont failli le d\u00e9penser. Les pilules, les dates annul\u00e9es, une voix qui parfois se pr\u00e9sentait et parfois non. June Carter est entr\u00e9e dans ce climat et elle est rest\u00e9e. Les disques qui remettent la l\u00e9gende d’aplomb n’ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 faits dans une salle polie. Le 13 janvier 1968 il joue \u00e0 la prison de Folsom, et l’album qui suit laisse la salle r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 Folsom Prison Blues<\/em> comme si la chanson avait enfin trouv\u00e9 l’adresse sur l’enveloppe. San Quentin, en 1969, lui donne A Boy Named Sue<\/em> et, plus important, un document live d’autorit\u00e9: un homme en noir qui raconte des blagues \u00e0 des hommes en cellule, puis renvoie San Quentin<\/em> aux murs. Les ann\u00e9es Columbia autour de ces bandes, avec Ring of Fire<\/em> d\u00e9j\u00e0 derri\u00e8re lui, ont fait du baryton un fait national.<\/p>\n

I Walk the Line<\/em> \u00e9tait un serment avant d’\u00eatre un tube. Il l’\u00e9crit en 1956 comme une promesse de fid\u00e9lit\u00e9, un changement d’accord simple qu’il devait garder en t\u00eate, et le single a rendu le baryton c\u00e9l\u00e8bre sans lui demander de s’adoucir. Le boom-chicka de Luther Perkins et Marshall Grant \u00e9tait un rythme sur lequel on pouvait r\u00e9gler une montre. Quand il passe chez Columbia, les arrangements grossissent, cuivres et ch\u0153urs, et il sonne parfois enferm\u00e9 dedans. Les albums de prison rouvrent la bo\u00eete. Bob Johnston produit la date de Folsom. June Carter, qu’il \u00e9pouse en mars 1968, est sur ces bandes non comme une d\u00e9coration mais comme l’autre voix de la pi\u00e8ce, celle qui r\u00e9pond. Le costume noir, alors, \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 un uniforme. La chanson de 1971 ne faisait que l’expliquer.<\/p>\n

Il a utilis\u00e9 ce fait pour autre chose que le guichet. The Man in Black<\/em>, la chanson de 1971, explique les v\u00eatements comme une liste de gens que les projecteurs n’atteignaient pas. Il a chant\u00e9 dans des prisons, il a parl\u00e9 des terres autochtones, il a port\u00e9 le gospel comme si ce n’\u00e9tait pas un genre \u00e0 part mais le sol sous les autres chansons. Toutes les causes n’\u00e9taient pas coh\u00e9rentes, et les ann\u00e9es d’\u00e9mission de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s ont pu le poncer en animateur. La voix, quand le groupe s’\u00e9cartait, sonnait encore comme un homme qui tenait un rendez-vous.<\/p>\n

Le dernier chapitre \u00e9tait le moins probable. En 1994 Rick Rubin le fait asseoir avec une guitare et presque rien d’autre, et appelle la s\u00e9rie American Recordings<\/em>. Hurt<\/em>, la chanson de Nine Inch Nails qu’il enregistre vers la fin, devient en 2002 un clip qui passe comme un testament: la maison, le mus\u00e9e de ses propres reliques, June tout pr\u00e8s. Il n’empruntait pas la nuit d’un groupe plus jeune. Il reconnaissait un texte qu’il avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 v\u00e9cu. June meurt en mai 2003. Il meurt le 12 septembre de la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Ce que les chanteurs plus jeunes empruntent, c’est le costume, le gravier, le mythe du hors-la-loi qui fut, pendant de longues plages, une star country au travail avec un cr\u00e9neau de t\u00e9l\u00e9vision. Ce qu’ils manquent, c’est la simplicit\u00e9. On met I Walk the Line<\/em> ou la bande de Folsom et le baryton ne joue pas la sinc\u00e9rit\u00e9. Il rapporte. Le serment \u00e9tait le phras\u00e9: peu de notes, pas de h\u00e2te, et une promesse que la chanson \u00e9tait pr\u00eate \u00e0 tenir.<\/p>\n
