Ice, sarcasm and a room full of microphones
Lou Reed’s 1974 Australian press conference, in the season of Sally Can’t Dance and the live burn of Rock n Roll Animal, is less an interview than a refusal of the game. Questions arrive hungry for scandal, for the Velvet Underground ghost, for a confession the room can print. The answers come back colder, shorter, and harder to weaponize. Between the shrug and the sarcasm you can still hear the craftsman, a man who knows exactly how much truth a pack of microphones deserves, and who will not spend one extra word on their hunger.
