A line he sang, then handed to the saxophone
On 3 February 1978, United Artists released Baker Street, the single that carried Gerry Rafferty’s album City to City. He had written it while he was stuck. Stealers Wheel, the band he shared with Joe Egan, split in 1975, and contract fights kept Rafferty from releasing new music for about three years. He travelled between his family in Paisley and lawyers in London, and he often stayed at a friend’s flat off Baker Street in Marylebone. The album title names that journey. The last verse sounds like the end of it: a new morning, and the singer going home.
The track was recorded in 1977 at Chipping Norton Studios in Oxfordshire. Rafferty and Hugh Murphy produced it. Rafferty sang and played rhythm guitar. Gary Taylor played bass, Henry Spinetti drums, Tommy Eyre keyboards, and Hugh Burns the guitar solo, with strings arranged by Graham Preskett. The album version runs 6 minutes and 6 seconds. The single edit is 4 minutes and 10 seconds. The B-side was Big Change in the Weather.
The break everyone remembers is eight bars of alto saxophone, played by Raphael Ravenscroft. Rafferty had asked for Pete Zorn first. Zorn was busy. Ravenscroft came in to play soprano and suggested the alto he had with him instead. He was paid a session fee of about £27. Years later he said most of what he played was an old blues phrase, and that Rafferty had not handed him a written line. Rafferty disagreed. He was annoyed that people gave the melody to the saxophone player.
It was my line. I sang it to him.
(Gerry Rafferty)

Guitarist Hugh Burns backed Rafferty’s account. The phrase is already on Rafferty’s demo, played on guitar. Burns tried it, and they agreed a saxophone would carry it better. That demo appeared on the 2011 reissue of City to City. In the notes, Rafferty’s collaborator Rab Noakes wrote that it ought to settle the argument. In 2011 Ravenscroft also said the part still bothered him because it sits slightly flat.
The single reached number 3 in the UK. In the United States it spent six weeks at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, kept off the top by Andy Gibb’s Shadow Dancing, and it did reach number 1 on the Cash Box chart. It was number 1 in Canada and in Australia. City to City went to number 1 on the US album chart and moved the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack off that spot. In 1979 the song won the Ivor Novello award for best song musically and lyrically. A joke Stuart Maconie wrote in the NME claimed the broadcaster Bob Holness had played the sax. He had not. By 2010, BMI counted more than five million performances of the song.

Short take: the groove on Baker Street still feels unfair. Sharing this in the group chat. Expect chaos.

Not my usual lane but Baker Street got me. Fair enough. Also the comments section on old forums was wild about this.

Read this, then put Baker Street on loud. That was the move. I am biased and fine with it.

heard Baker Street a thousand times. This reminded me why it stuck. Might be recency bias but I do not care today. Fight me.

Radio killed Baker Street for me for years. Came back last month. Instant regret for waiting. Might be recency bias but I do not care today.

Anyone else think the live versions of Baker Street are better? Studio still wins for me though. I told my coworker and they shrugged. Their loss.

This is the track I put on to test new speakers. Gerry Rafferty never lies. I told my coworker and they shrugged. Their loss.

I argued with my brother about Baker Street for years. This is my exhibit A. Coffee got cold while I finished the article. Acceptable.
