Planet 1982, Perry production, Break Out second life
In September 1982, Planet Records released I’m So Excited by The Pointer Sisters. Anita, June, and Ruth Pointer wrote it with saxophonist and arranger Trevor Lawrence; Richard Perry produced. The track appeared on the album So Excited!. The first US chart run peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. The sisters were already veterans: Oakland roots, early jazz-and-R&B experiments, then a sharper pop-and-dance focus under Perry at Planet / RCA.
What you hear is built for the floor: a firm dance pulse, stacked sister vocals, and a chorus that states its case without mystery. Perry’s production keeps the arrangement bright and clear. The 1982 single also reached the US Dance and R&B charts, but its bigger life came later. In July 1984 a remixed version was reissued and added to a revised edition of the album Break Out. That campaign took the song to No. 9 on the Hot 100, No. 11 in the UK, and strong marks across Europe.
The official video, all sequins and stage energy, locked the song into mid-80s MTV rotation. Billboard later ranked it among the great girl-group tracks. For The Pointer Sisters, it sat beside other Perry-era hits such as Jump (For My Love) and Neutron Dance as proof that the trio’s voice blend could carry mainstream dance-pop without losing their identity.
I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it / I’m about to lose control and I think I like it.
(Anita, June and Ruth Pointer with Trevor Lawrence, lyric from I’m So Excited)

The two-stage chart story matters: a solid 1982 single, then a 1984 remix that finished the job. Same writers, same producer credit, wider radio. Listeners who meet the song through wedding playlists or sports arenas are hearing that second-wave mix more often than the original album edit.
Play the 1982 So Excited! cut, then the 1984 Break Out remix. The excitement is the point, and the sisters deliver it straight. That clarity is why the track still works whenever a room needs a fast lift.

My dad played The Pointer Sisters in the car. I’m So Excited is basically my childhood commute. Also the comments section on old forums was wild about this. That is all.
