September 2022 single: holiday-town night, then the trilogy’s love song lands
A swirling groove, widescreen chords, and a vocal that stays melodic even when the lyric turns dark. Don’t Say It’s Over arrived in September 2022 as an advance single for Turn The Car Around, released 13 January 2023 on Hot Fruit Recordings / Virgin Music. Coombes framed the album as the close of a solo trilogy that began with Matador (2015) and World’s Strongest Man (2018). Track two on the finished LP, the song sits after Overnight Trains and before the gnarled Feel Loop (Lizard Dream). From the first chorus you hear why it led the winter campaign: atmosphere enough for a story, band weight enough for halls that still expected Supergrass energy.
He wrote it about the night he met his wife, picturing two people walking a busy holiday town after dark, sharing strange, beautiful moments, then facing what life looks like without that love. The official video went out on his channel as a finished promo clip, not a lyric placeholder. Arrangement-wise it floats with what later reviews called cinematic psychedelic grace inside a careful, reflective solo palette that still spikes into rock. Light and dark share the same stereo picture. That contradiction is not decoration; it is the craft Coombes said he finds interesting, and the reason the chorus asks for permanence without pretending the dark edges are gone.
On the album campaign it followed earlier taste Sonny the Strong and preceded the mannequin-world clip for Long Live The Strange. Live in 2023, including intimate sessions such as 2 Meter Sessions, Coombes kept the song in the set as a mid-tempo centre. Critics heard it as elegant proof that the trilogy still moved. It was never designed to out-chart Britpop hits; it was designed to state what seven years of solo writing had been building toward. Inside Turn The Car Around it is the love song with teeth, not a soft centre.
When I wrote Don’t Say It’s Over I had in mind wandering through some bustling holiday town at night, two people sharing strange and beautiful moments together. The feeling of love and all its complications. And the reality of a life without that love. It’s basically saying (albeit with a few dark edges), my life is better with you in it.
