December 2015: Stargate pulse, Tove Lo on the other end of the line
Fun sits sixth on Coldplay’s December 2015 album A Head Full of Dreams, and it arrives already mid-conversation. Chris Martin opens on the end of a relationship before the other person says the words. Tove Lo answers from the other side of the line. Rik Simpson and Norwegian duo Stargate (Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen) frame a mid-tempo pulse: programmed beat, guitars that stay polite until the arrangement darkens, a chorus that keeps asking the same practical question. Didn’t we have fun. Don’t say it was all a waste. The hook works because it sounds like something people actually say when the relationship is already over.
The band (Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, Will Champion) wrote the core with Stargate; Tove Lo’s featured vocal turns the track into a dialogue instead of a monologue, and that shift is the point of pressing play. Lyrics name Icarus, lightning, two forces colliding, then pull back to forever said at the top of the waves. It is pop rock built for stadiums that still leaves room for doubt. Reviews caught a Cure-like shade near the end. The singles campaign around the album focused elsewhere (Adventure of a Lifetime, Hymn for the Weekend), so Fun lived mostly as an album deep cut that radio and streaming playlists of breakup anthems still found, the track you discover mid-record and then keep returning to when the bright singles have worn thin.
Live on the Head Full of Dreams Tour, the song fitted the show’s bright staging: coloured lights, confetti, Martin walking the thrust. Tove Lo’s parts were sometimes carried by backing tracks or guests depending on the night. On record, her voice stays dry enough to cut through the sheen, which is why the reply lands. Compared with earlier Coldplay ballads that beg for reversal, Fun accepts the ending and still inventories the good nights. That matches the album’s brief after Ghost Stories: colour back in, without pretending the previous chapter never happened.

Return to the track and you hear Stargate’s pop architecture under Martin’s familiar ache, and a Swedish guest who refuses to let the goodbye stay one-sided. Parlophone and Atlantic issued the album cut as is; no heavy remix package was required for it to circulate.
It never needed to be the lead single. It needed to sit in the middle of the record and ask the question people actually ask when love is finished but the nights were not nothing.
