Grantis asked for tomorrow. Prince said now.
Around four in the morning in July 2013, Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL were in a room at Paisley Park in Chanhassen, playing ANOTHERLOVE live to tape. Donna Grantis was on rhythm guitar. She knew the ending was going to be a long solo and asked, in her head, for the next day. Prince told her to do it now. On the finished track the two of them trade four-bar phrases until the song runs out.
ANOTHERLOVE is not a Prince original. It is adapted from Another Love, written by Alice Smith, Rebecca Jordan and Reginald “Syience” Perry, and released on Smith’s 2013 album She. Prince wrote an extra verse. The Plectrumelectrum credit says the song was adapted from that original. The band on the take is the trio he had built for a rock record: Grantis on guitar, Ida Nielsen on bass, Hannah Ford Welton on drums, Prince on vocals and the other guitar. Prince Vault places the basic tracking in mid-to-late July 2013 at Paisley Park. Dr. Funkenberry mentioned the title, along with Funknroll, on 31 July 2013.
3RDEYEGIRL had started in public that January, at a small show at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. By the summer they were on the Live Out Loud tour and using the same Studio B where the album would be cut. Prince had found them the new way. Welton, already in the band, pulled Grantis off a YouTube clip of her fusion trio playing Billy Cobham’s Stratus, a tune already in Prince’s live set. Grantis, from Mississauga and trained at McGill, booked a one-way ticket.
It was like 4 in the morning one night when we played the track all together. I was playing the rhythm guitar part and I knew that whole long jam at the end was going to be a massive solo. Prince asked me if I wanted to record the solo right there or the next day. I thought I’d like to record it tomorrow, so I could work out some ideas. And he said: OK. Let’s do it now.

Plectrumelectrum came out on 30 September 2014, the same day as Prince’s solo album Art Official Age. NPG Records and Warner Bros. shared it, the first Prince album back with Warner after the years apart. The official discography calls it a live-to-tape rock record, a break from the digital studio. It opened at number 8 on the Billboard 200. ANOTHERLOVE is track nine and runs 4:15.
The first time the lyric showed up on a stage was not even the whole song. On 7 August 2013 at Dyrehaven in Skanderborg, Denmark, Prince dropped a piece of it into Nothing Compares 2 U. The only known full performance is 1 November 2014 on Saturday Night Live, in an extended set that ran about eight minutes, longer than the show usually allowed one act. Warner put out a lyric video that December, built from that broadcast. The solo on the record is still the one Grantis played because Prince would not wait until morning.
