Creation, Monnow Valley scrap, Sawmills rebuild
On 29 August 1994 Creation released Definitely Maybe, the Oasis debut finished after abandoned Monnow Valley sessions and a rebuild at Sawmills with Owen Morris reshaping the mix. January 1994 work with Dave Batchelor at Monnow Valley felt clinical; parts tracked in isolation lacked spark. February sessions at Sawmills in Cornwall with Noel and Mark Coyle still needed rescue. Manager Marcus Russell brought in Morris, who mixed at Loco in Wales and The Matrix in London, stripping excess guitar layers, compressing hard, and often varispeeding tapes slightly faster for excitement. Final mastering passed through Johnny Marr’s Manchester setup.
The finished sequence opens with Rock ‘n’ Roll Star and runs through Shakermaker, Live Forever, Up in the Sky, Columbia, Supersonic, Bring It on Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Digsy’s Dinner, Slide Away, and Married with Children. Liam’s nasal lead sits on Bonehead’s rhythm crunch and Noel’s lead lines; Tony McCarroll’s drums stay dry and forward. The living-room sleeve (Brian Cannon / Michael Spencer Jones) packs Burt Bacharach on the wall, a globe, and the five-piece sprawled across a Manchester flat.
Lead single Supersonic arrived in April 1994; Live Forever and Cigarettes & Alcohol followed into the autumn. UK indie charts and then the main album chart answered fast. US Epic picked the record up as Britpop crossed the Atlantic. Small venues still framed the early tour cycle even as the songs already sounded built for arenas.

The album hit number one in the UK and eventually passed multi-Platinum sales at home. Live Forever became the early live centrepiece; Supersonic stayed the origin myth of the first single. Later reissues and deluxe editions kept Monnow Valley and early mixes in circulation for fans tracing how close the project came to failure.
What remains is a debut rescued in the mix: Manchester songs, Cornish tracking, Welsh and London surgery. Every later Oasis album still answers to this blueprint of volume, attitude, and chorus-first writing. Without Morris’s hard compress and cuts, the Creation story might have stalled at demos.
