Glades 1972, Lowrey organ, Miami hit
In August 1972, Miami singer and keyboardist Timmy Thomas recorded Why Can’t We Live Together for Glades Records, part of Henry Stone’s TK family. Thomas wrote and produced the track. A demo was cut at Bobby Dukoff Recording Studios in North Miami with engineer Bill Borkan. The arrangement is famously spare: Lowrey organ, bass from the organ pedals, built-in rhythm presets in a light bossa-nova feel, and Thomas’s vocal. No full band on the hit take. Later accounts clarified that the pulse came from the organ’s own rhythm section rather than a separate drum machine, which is why the groove feels both mechanical and human.
The lyric asks a plain question about peace and coexistence while Vietnam and racial conflict filled the news. Thomas delivers it in a soul voice without big production tricks. The single version runs shorter than the album cut; many stations preferred the tighter edit, while others left room for the longer instrumental coda. Released late in 1972, the song climbed in early 1973 to No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and No. 3 on the Hot 100, selling over two million copies. It also reached No. 12 in the UK, No. 6 in Canada, and solid marks in Australia.
The same title headed Thomas’s debut album on Glades, with Steve Alaimo co-producing parts of the LP recorded in Miami that autumn. On that record Thomas remains the main player, using the organ’s rhythm section across tracks. The hit stayed his signature. Decades later, covers and samples, including Drake’s use of the rhythm idea on Hotline Bling, put the original back in front of new listeners who then found the 1972 single.
Why can’t we live together?
(Timmy Thomas, lyric from Why Can’t We Live Together, 1972)

What lasts is the gap between the simple setup and the chart power. One man, one organ, a rhythm-box feel, and a chorus anyone can sing. That economy made the record sound modern decades later to producers hunting space and honesty. It also made Thomas a one-hit giant whose name still means this song first.
Play the Glades single before compilation edits. The mono-leaning mix and the open ending of the longer album take show how little Thomas needed to fill a room and a year-end chart.

Short take: the groove on Why Can’t We Live Together still feels unfair. I am biased and fine with it.

I came for Soul / R&B, stayed for how clean this write-up is. Why Can’t We Live Together hits different after reading. Also the comments section on old forums was wild about this.
