Behind the red dress, a few facts sit quieter than the myth.
1She wrote one of her debut songs at thirteen
The Man with the Child in His Eyes was written when Kate Bush was thirteen. The take on The Kick Inside is not a later remake: it is the recording made at AIR Studios in London in 1975, when she was sixteen. David Gilmour produced that session and helped open the door at EMI. The album, in 1978, kept the teenage vocal.
2She overruled her label on the first single
EMI wanted James and the Cold Gun as the debut single. Bush insisted on Wuthering Heights, released on 20 January 1978. It spent four weeks at number one in the UK that March. She became the first woman to top the Official Singles Chart with a song she had written herself. She was nineteen.
3The red dress was a dance, not a costume
Before the videos, she studied mime and movement with Lindsay Kemp, the teacher who had shaped David Bowie’s stage body, and with Adam Darius. The wide eyes and the red dress of the Wuthering Heights clip come from that training. She was not decorating a pop song. She was using a body the way Kemp had taught her to.
4One tour, then a thirty-five-year silence on the road
The Tour of Life, in the spring of 1979, was her only full concert tour for thirty-five years. She sang into a wireless headset microphone, among the first rock singers to do so. The return was not a road trip. Before the Dawn was twenty-two nights at the Hammersmith Apollo, from 26 August to 1 October 2014.
5Forty-four years between her two UK number ones
Running Up That Hill, from Hounds of Love in 1985, returned to number one in the UK in June 2022 after Stranger Things used it. Forty-four years separated that summit from Wuthering Heights, the longest gap between number ones by the same act in Official Chart history. In the United States the same revival reached number three on the Hot 100. The chart, not the myth, kept the receipt.
