In Hanover, Germany, in 2008, the band was measured at 139 decibels. For scale: a jet engine at close range sits near 130 dB, and the pain threshold for hearing is usually placed around 120 to 130 dB.
Earlier claims include The Who at 126 dB in London in 1976, and Motörhead nights often clocked near 130 dB. KISS and AC/DC ran famously loud PAs as well, but no official published figure has topped Manowar’s Hanover number.
After some of those shows, attendees reported headaches, ringing ears, and damage to thin venue walls that were never built for that kind of load.
