Ringer’s bass line, Mondino’s clip
In November 1986, Les Rita Mitsouko released C’est comme ça on Virgin. It was the second single from The No Comprendo, the album that had come out on 20 September 1986. On the LP it is track three and runs 4 minutes and 53 seconds. A longer version, about eight minutes, went out on a 12-inch. The B-sides were Don’t Forget the Night and Clown de mes malheurs. Fred Chichin and Catherine Ringer wrote it. They produced it with Tony Visconti. The recording was done at Studio Garage in Paris and at Studio Good Earth in London. The first single from the album, Andy, had come out in June and stopped at number 19 in France. C’est comme ça was the one that stayed.
Ringer plays the bass, and she has said she found the rhythm of the refrain. The final guitar solo is by Sam Smith, an English session guitarist who also worked on Marc & Robert, not the pop singer who later used the same name. Chichin plays guitar and keyboards on the album. Visconti plays bass, drums and strings on various tracks. The beat stays quick, and Ringer’s vocal sits in front of it. The refrain is the title, four words, repeated.
The lyric is short and strange. It talks about a secret that cuts and gives, about venom, and about the trouble when there is no pleasure. Years later Ringer said those words pointed to sexual violence she had suffered as a teenager, and to the silence around it. That reading is not spelled out on the 1986 sleeve. On the record, the arrangement stays bright and the chorus is easy to shout.
On C’est comme ça I play the bass, and I found the rhythm of the refrain.
(Catherine Ringer, Radio-Canada, 3 September 2023)

Jean-Baptiste Mondino directed the video, with computer images by the Paris studio Mac Guff. At the 1987 Victoires de la Musique it won video of the year. The same night The No Comprendo won best album. In France the single reached number 10 and stayed on the chart for 20 weeks. It was the duo’s second top ten there, after Marcia Baïla, and their last. The song is used in Étienne Chatiliez’s La vie est un long fleuve tranquille and in Alain Corneau’s Le Cousin.
In 2004 the Brazilian band Capital Inicial recorded a Portuguese version called Sem Cansar. In 2024 the New Zealand group Ha the Unclear covered the original on the album A Kingdom in a Cul-de-sac. The version to play is the 1986 album track, the one Mondino cut the video to, before later compilations. The long 12-inch is the same song with more room around the bass.

I argued with my brother about C’est comme ça for years. This is my exhibit A. I told my coworker and they shrugged. Their loss.

Ok but who else puts C’est comme ça on at 1am and feels seen? Coffee got cold while I finished the article. Acceptable.

I came for Les Rita Mitsouko, stayed for how clean this write-up is. C’est comme ça hits different after reading. Might be recency bias but I do not care today.

My dad played Les Rita Mitsouko in the car. C’est comme ça is basically my childhood commute. Sharing this in the group chat. Expect chaos. Ok bye.
