Lust For Life, 1977: Gardiner’s riff, Pop’s window seat, decades without a promo clip
The Passenger is the open-road track on Iggy Pop’s Lust For Life (1977). Ricky Gardiner’s guitar turns in a circle while Pop narrates looking out of a car at city lights. The famous “la la la” chorus needs no translation. Credits list Pop and Gardiner as writers; Bowie and Colin Thurston sit in the production / engineering chain that also carried the album’s title song. Tony and Hunt Sales lock the rhythm section underneath.
Pop has described the lyric as something written while riding as a passenger, watching streets pass. That matches the arrangement: no solo showpiece, just forward motion and a chant. Berlin’s night geometry (neon, wet asphalt, tram lines) sits behind the words even when the recording room is closed. Compared with Lust For Life‘s drum shove, The Passenger is mid-tempo cruise control.
For years there was no proper promo video. In 2020, director Simon Taylor / Tomato Studio assembled an official clip from period photographs and night-driving footage for Iggy’s channels. Until then, radio edits, covers (Siouxsie, Michael Hutchence duet lore, countless bar bands), and film syncs did the visual work. The 2020 film finally gave the song a face without inventing a fake 1977 set.

Chart peaks for the original single were quieter than its later status. Compilation culture and alternative radio kept the chorus alive until streaming made the full album cut automatic. Live, the la-la-la section still turns audiences into the second vocalist.
