On American Bandstand in January 1984, Madonna steps into Dick Clark’s polite spotlight still carrying downtown New York and the slow burn of her debut album. She has just danced through Holiday; the studio crowd keeps interrupting; Clark keeps trying to frame a career. Asked what she hopes for, not only in 1984 but for the rest of her professional life, she answers without raising her voice: to rule the world.
