18 May 2023: first new Blur single since The Magic Whip, Studio 13
The Narcissist announced The Ballad of Darren on 18 May 2023. Eight years after The Magic Whip, Blur put out a mid-tempo alternative rock single produced by James Ford, recorded at Studio 13 in London and Devon between January and May that year. Albarn’s vocal sits forward over Coxon’s interlocking guitar parts; the chorus opens outward without chasing a woo-hoo or a Parklife brass stunt. Parlophone / Warner issued the track as the album’s lead single ahead of the 21 July release. The job was clear from the first listen: prove the four of them could write a new chorus that did not need Britpop cosplay to get back on the radio.
On the UK Singles Chart it peaked at number 81 in June 2023, the band’s first entry there since Under the Westway in 2012. In the United States it reached Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart, their first appearance there since Crazy Beat in 2003, a gap Billboard noted as a chart record for the band. An official visualiser accompanied the release; live debuts followed at warm-up shows and then the Wembley Stadium dates in July, where the new song sat beside older hits without apologising for its mid-tempo patience. Charts were never going to look like 1994. The point was presence: a new Blur song on the radio that sounded like late-period Blur, not a tribute act.
Ford’s production keeps the arrangement lean: keyboards in the bed, drums that hit without crowding, a guitar tone closer to late-period Blur than to Parklife brass. The lyric watches self-regard and distance without turning into a lecture or a reunion press statement. On the album the song sits sixth, after Barbaric and The Everglades (For Leonard), still carrying the weight of being the track that reopened the file for listeners who had waited eight years. The album went to UK number one; the song earned an Ivor Novello nomination in 2024 for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.

Return to the May single and the mirror still holds. Beside the Wembley headlines and the number-one album, The Narcissist is the quieter proof: a lead single that asks for attention without shouting, and a writing nomination that fits the record’s mood better than a stadium chant would.
First new single in eight years. The mirror held long enough. Press play for Coxon’s interlocking parts and Albarn’s forward vocal, stay for Ford’s lean frame and the chorus that opens without a woo-hoo, and notice how little nostalgia a comeback needs when the band simply writes another Blur song.
