Afterlife Interview with David Bowie

Riffs and Beats finds David Bowie on a station platform that never announces arrivals, the Thin White Duke watching the board like a set list. We agree the station is fictional; the suitcase of aliases still looks used.

Riffs and Beats
David, this platform never lists a destination. Is this the next stop after Blackstar?

David Bowie
Stations are costumes. Blackstar was a letter posted while I still had stamps. Up here the postmark is flexible. I like platforms because they are honest about leaving. Sit if you want. The clocks keep better time than managers ever did.

Riffs and Beats
Ziggy, Aladdin, the Duke. Did any of them ever refuse to leave the stage?

David Bowie
They all tried. That is why I killed them politely. A character who overstays becomes a museum. I preferred rental identities with excellent lighting. Ziggy taught me glitter can be architecture. The Duke taught me restraint can be louder than feathers. I kept the luggage tags. I did not keep the cages.

Riffs and Beats
Heroes was recorded in Berlin with a wall outside the window. What did the wall teach the song?

David Bowie
That romance can be political without a speech. Tony Visconti and I stretched the take so the lovers could stay standing one day longer than sense allowed. Brian Eno’s treatments made the room larger than the bricks. The wall was scenery with teeth. The song was a dare whispered at full volume. Change the accent mid-sentence and the wallpaper still changes costume.

Riffs and Beats
You painted a lightning bolt across a face and somehow made it soft. How?

David Bowie
By treating makeup as score, not mask. The bolt was a rhythm you could see. Aladdin Sane was not alien armour. It was a man admitting fracture and still asking for dance floor space. Softness is not the opposite of shock. Softness is what lets shock travel further.

Riffs and Beats
Space Oddity made you a star before you were ready, some say. Were you ready?

David Bowie
Readiness is a myth sold by people who never leave Earth. Major Tom was my rehearsal for distance. I was young enough to confuse orbit with escape, which is useful. The song floated. I learned later that floating is work. Ground Control was always a metaphor for anyone who loves you and cannot follow. I mean every syllable of that sentence.

Riffs and Beats
Berlin years: low, soft, electronic. Was that recovery or invention?

David Bowie
Both, and inventing is the better medicine. Low, Heroes, Lodger were rooms I built so I could walk through myself without an audience. Iggy was nearby, punching holes in the night. The city smelled of coal and possibility. I needed anonymity like a vitamin. Invention arrived wearing a coat.

Riffs and Beats
You collaborated with everyone from Nile Rodgers to Brian Eno. What did you look for in a partner?

David Bowie
Curiosity with muscle. I wanted people who could disagree in the same key. Nile brought champagne funk that still had a brain. Eno brought accidents that behaved like destiny. A partner should scare you a little at breakfast. Otherwise you are only recording your own echo. That is not nostalgia. That is inventory.

Riffs and Beats
Lazarus and Blackstar arrived like a final bow. Did you stage your exit?

David Bowie
I staged a farewell without a press conference. Artists are allowed curtains. The work was the message. If people heard goodbye, good. If they heard curiosity, better. I never wanted pity as a genre. I wanted craft that kept walking after the body sat down.

Riffs and Beats
What still surprises you about Earth from up here?

David Bowie
That strangers still dress as you for courage. That a song can outlive a government. That fashion and grief share a wardrobe. I am not surprised by love. Love always had better special effects than science fiction admitted.

Riffs and Beats
Let’s Dance made you a global pop machine overnight. Did the gloss hide the oddness or amplify it?

David Bowie
Gloss is a useful disguise for oddness. Nile Rodgers and I built a dance floor sturdy enough to hold alienation without slipping. China Girl, Modern Love, the blond crop: they were invitations with trapdoors. Pop that refuses mystery becomes wallpaper. I preferred wallpaper that stared back and asked who you were pretending to be at 2 a.m.

Riffs and Beats
What advice would you leave taped to a studio door?

David Bowie
Change rooms before the furniture owns you. Steal from painters, novelists, and bad television. Protect a private hour every day where no character is allowed in. And if the song feels finished too early, it is lying. Finish it again until it surprises you at breakfast and slightly frightens the engineer.

A silent train slides in without brakes. He boards with a saxophone case under one arm, tips an invisible hat to the platform, and leaves a lightning-bolt scrawl on the wall like a forwarding address.
