XO heartbreak in a red jacket
In March 2020, After Hours arrived as a heartbreak album scored like a long night drive. Abel Tesfaye sharpened the Weeknd persona: red jacket, bloody face, Las Vegas hangover over synthwave and eighties pop chords. Max Martin, Metro Boomin, Illangelo and others framed a voice that made vulnerability sound dangerous.
“Blinding Lights” became a global pulse and a multi-year chart fixture. “Heartless”, “In Your Eyes”, “Save Your Tears”, and the title track map regret with dancefloor bass. The deluxe edition extends the set; the standard album already feels long on purpose.
What sticks is the craft under the costume. Pop maximalism with an R&B bruise. A quarantine-era soundtrack that felt like the last party before lockdown, built with named producers.
