Polo & Pan – Dorothy

Ekler’o’shock, September 2014: Oz, aliens, first EP

On 22 September 2014, Paul Armand-Delille (Polo) and Alexandre Grynszpan (Pan) released their debut EP Dorothy on Hamburger Records and Ekler’o’shock. The title track runs about five minutes sixteen. The EP also holds Cœur d’artichaut, Rivolta, Dragon Pom Z, plus remixes by In Flagranti and Get A Room!. This chronicle stays with that 2014 original, not the later anniversary remixes.

Before the EP, the duo were known for club and festival DJ sets – Le Baron, Calvi on the Rocks – more than for a finished studio statement. Dorothy fixed their calling card: warm house tempos, French-pop melody, and samples that feel cinematic rather than purely functional. The title nods to The Wizard of Oz; the official video, directed by David Tomaszewski and premiered around 10 September 2014, overlays Judy Garland’s film world with aliens and collage humour.

On the track itself you hear a steady dance pulse, soft synths, and a vocal hook that stays singable after one listen. Polo & Pan favour clarity over density: each layer has room, the bass stays round, and the melody carries the fairy-tale wink without turning childish. EARMILK described the premiere as French-pop with a bizarre edge – weird enough to watch twice, clear enough to play in a daytime set.

The video mattered as much as the audio for first contact. Tomaszewski’s edit travels online the way early viral dance clips did: one strong visual gag, a track you can loop, and a duo still introducing themselves. Festival bookers and blog playlists picked it up as an entry point long before the bigger albums arrived.

The EP launched a run that later included Canopée, Nanã, the album Caravelle, and festival headline slots. Ten years on, anniversary editions and remixes (including a 2024 Myd version) pointed back to this first chapter. Those revisits are footnotes; the work to chronical is the 2014 Hamburger / Ekler release and Tomaszewski’s Oz collage.

Put on the original Dorothy from the 2014 EP. That is where Polo & Pan first sound fully themselves on record: dancefloor tempo, pop melody, and a film reference worn lightly.
